Dow Academy
Dow Academy was a historic school in Franconia, New Hampshire, United States. Founded in 1884, it served as the town's high school until 1958, after which its building, a Georgian Revival wood-frame building built in 1903, became a centerpiece of the Franconia College campus. The building was converted into condominium residences in 1983; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. School history Dow Academy was founded in 1884 by Moses Dow, a magazine publisher, as a secondary school for both local and out-of-town boarding students. He seeded the school with $15,000 for construction of its first building, which stood at the corner of Church and Academy streets and was completed in 1885. That building was destroyed by fire in December 1902. Franconia, New Hampshire
Franconia is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,083 at the 2020 census. Set in the White Mountains, Franconia is home to the northern half of Franconia Notch State Park. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the eastern and southern portions of the town. The Appalachian Trail crosses the town. History The town was first granted in 1764 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth as "Franconia", a name widely applied to the region by 1760 due to the terrain's resemblance to the Franconian Switzerland in the region of Franconia in Germany. Upon claims that a settlement was not made within the time prescribed under the terms of the charter, it was regranted in 1772 by his nephew, Governor John Wentworth, as "Morristown". Finch College
Finch College was an undergraduate women's college in Manhattan, New York City. The Finch School opened as a private secondary school for girls in 1900 and became a liberal arts college in 1952. It closed in 1976. Founding Finch was founded in 1900 as The Finch School by Jessica Finch (' Garretson, later Cosgrave; 1871–1949), an alumna of Barnard College and New York University. She was a prominent women's rights activist and Socialist. Finch believed that the education she had received at Barnard College had not prepared her for a vocational life, so she decided to open a school to emphasize practical education. She developed a curriculum that was strongly based on both the liberal arts and hands-on learning, with special emphasis on workshops and studio art lessons. Suffragette
A suffragette was a member of an activist women's organisation in the early 20th century who, under the banner "Votes for Women", fought for the right to vote in public elections in the United Kingdom. The term refers in particular to members of the British Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), a women-only movement founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst, which engaged in direct action and civil disobedience. In 1906, a reporter writing in the ''Daily Mail'' coined the term ''suffragette'' for the WSPU, derived from suffragist (any person advocating for voting rights), in order to belittle the women advocating women's suffrage. The militants embraced the new name, even adopting it for use as the title of the newspaper published by the WSPU. Jessica Garretson Finch
Jessica Garretson Finch (August 19, 1871 – October 31, 1949) was an American educator, author, women's rights activist, founder of the Birch Wathen Lenox School, Lennox School for girls, and founding president of Finch College. Early life Finch was born on August 19, 1871, the daughter of Congregational church, Congregational minister Rev. Ferdinand Van De Vere Garretson and Helen Philbrick Garretson. When she was 12, the family moved from New York, where her father was rector of Grace Chapel on West 22nd Street, to Franconia, New Hampshire. She attended Dow Academy and the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Cambridge Latin School before entering Barnard College. The Abbie Greenleaf Library is the public library in Franconia, New Hampshire. It is located at 439 Main St. in the center of the main village, in a Jacobethan building designed by William H. McLean and built in 1912. The building was a gift to the town from Charles Greenleaf and named in honor of his wife.
