Doukades
Doukades ( el, Δουκάδες) is a village and a community in the northwestern part of the island of Corfu. It is located in the municipal unit of Palaiokastritsa. In 2011 its population was 630 for the village and 724 for the community, including the village Papathanatika. Hills dominate the area. Population History According to I. Bounia, the name of the settlement came from its first inhabitants who bore the name Doukas (Δούκας, meaning duke). The earliest written reference to Doukades is a notary writing from 1616. Of interest are the restored stone mansion of the family Theotokis, the Venetian type "Sagrado" of Kouartano, and the building of the elementary school at the entrance of the village. Doukades was characterized as a traditional settlement with the law of October 19, 1978 No. 594 IV / November 13, 1998 (Codical statistics, number 22.1.137.01). Palaiokastritsa
Palaiokastritsa ( el, Παλαιοκαστρίτσα meaning ''Little Old Castle place'', referring to nearby Angelokastro) is a village in northwestern Corfu, Greece. Corfu has been suggested to be the mythical island of the Phaeacians and the bay of Palaiokastritsa to be the place where Odysseus disembarked and met Nausicaa for the first time. The monastery in Palaiokastritsa, which dates from 1225, houses a museum. Administrative history Palaiokastrites was a former municipality on the island of Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece. Its including area was defined around the original village of Palaiokastritsa. Since the 2019 local government reform Palaiokastrites is part of the municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands as a smaller municipal unit. Ionian Islands (region)
The Ionian Islands Region ( el, Περιφέρεια Ιονίων Νήσων, translit=Periféria Ioníon Níson, ) is the smallest by area of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece located in the Ionian Sea. It comprises all the Ionian Islands except Kythera, which, although historically part of the island group, was separated and integrated to the Attica Region. Demographics The population of the Ionian Islands in 2011 was 207,855, decreased by 1.5% compared to the population in 2001. Nevertheless, the region remains the third by population density with 90.1/km2 nationwide, well above the national of 81.96/km2. The most populous of the major islands is Corfu with a population of 104,371, followed by Zante (40,759), Cephalonia (35,801), Leucas (23,693) and Ithaca (3,231). Corfu ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Κερκύρας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Ionian Islands. The capital of the regional unit is the town of Corfu. The regional unit consists of the islands of Corfu, Paxoi, Othonoi, Ereikoussa, Mathraki and several smaller islands, all in the Ionian Sea. Central Corfu and Diapontian Islands ( el, Κεντρική Κέρκυρα και Διαπόντια Νησιά ''Kentriki Kerkyra kai Diapontia Nisia'') is a municipality in the Ionian Islands region in Greece. It covers the central part of the island of Corfu and the Diapontian Islands. The municipality was formed at the 2019 local government reform, when the pre-existing municipality of Corfu was divided in three. Its seat is the city Corfu.
