Douglas Oakervee
Sir Douglas Edwin Oakervee FHKIE (born December 1940) is a British civil engineer who is a past chairman of both High Speed 2 and Crossrail, and was the 139th president of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He was awarded the CBE in 2010 for his contributions to civil engineering and appointed Knight bachelor in 2022 for services to transport and infrastructure delivery. Early life and education He was born in 1940 in northwest London and attended Willesden Technical College. Civil engineering projects In 1991, Oakervee was appointed as project director for the Hong Kong International Airport project, built on a man-made island in the South China Sea. Before that he was the chief tunnel engineer on the Hong Kong mass transit railway project. From 2012 to 2014 he was chairman of the company constructing the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway in England. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE, ) is a professional body of engineers in Hong Kong. It was founded in 1947 as the ''Engineering Society of Hong Kong'' and was incorporated by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong as ''The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers'' in 1975. Flybe (pronounced ), styled as flybe, is a British airline based at Birmingham Airport, England. History The airline traces its history back to Jersey European Airways, which was set up in 1979 following the merger of Intra Airways and Express Air Services. The firm was renamed British European in 2000 and Flybe in 2002. In November 2006, Flybe purchased BA Connect, thereby becoming the largest regional airline in Europe. Colin John Clinton
Colin John Clinton is a British civil engineer who has worked as a director of the Arup Group engineering consultancy. He served as president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2004–05. Biography Colin Clinton was born in Walsall, Staffordshire, in 1956 or 1957, and holds a bachelor of science degree from Aston University, Birmingham. He spent much of his career with Arup Group, the engineering consultancy and designer. By 1999, he was an associate of the firm and business manager of its Arup Transport division. He became a director by 2005, at which point he was living in Sutton Coldfield and commuting to the firm's Birmingham office. In an interview with ''The Times'' he commented on his frequent travel by train, noting that his day was ruined if he could not have a bacon butty and a cup of tea. This is a list of presidents of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). The president's role is to represent the institution and to promote the profession to the public. The first president was Thomas Telford who had the office bestowed upon him for life in recognition of his contributions to the civil engineering profession. It became a biennial office with the election of William Cubitt, Sir William Cubitt in 1849 and an annual office with the election of George Berkley (engineer), Sir George Berkley in 1891, which it has remained since. On 18 December 1956 Harold Gourley died just six weeks after assuming the office in November. Adrian Long
Adrian Ernest Long (15 April 1941 – 23 April 2022) was a civil engineer from Northern Ireland. A professor at Queen's University Belfast, he had a particular interest in concrete structures and patented FlexiArch, a pre-cast concrete arch product. He served as president of the Institution of Civil Engineers for 2002–03, the first Northern Irish engineer to do so. Biography Long was born on 15 April 1941 in Dungannon, County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. He stated that he came from a carpentry and blacksmithing background. In 1959, Long entered Queen's University Belfast (QUB) to study civil engineering. He graduated with first class honours and then took a PhD at Queens. In 1967, he moved to Canada, working as bridge designer for Fenco Engineering in Toronto. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. The Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers was founded in England in 1771. It was the first engineering society to be formed anywhere in the world, and remains the oldest. It was originally known as the Society of Civil Engineers, being renamed following its founder's death.
