Douglas Kelley
Lt. Colonel Douglas McGlashan Kelley (11 August 1912 – January 1, 1958) was a United States Army Military Intelligence Corps officer who served as chief psychiatrist at Nuremberg Prison during the Nuremberg War Trials. He worked to ascertain defendants' competency before they stood trial. Life and career Kelley was born in Truckee, California. He graduated from University of California at Berkeley and received his medical degree from the School of Medicine in San Francisco. He continued his studies at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, earning a Doctor of Medical Science in 1941. In 1942 he was called to duty in the United States Army Medical Corps as chief psychiatrist for the 30th General Hospital in the European Theatre. Along with psychologist Gustave Gilbert he administered the Rorschach inkblot test to the 22 defendants in the Nazi leadership group prior to the first Nuremberg trials. Douglas Forsythe Kelley
Douglas Forsythe Kelley (August 9, 1928 – November 21, 2021) was an American industrial designer who was known for designing the T-chair and the Elna Lotus sewing machine. Life and career Kelley was born in Buffalo, New York on August 9, 1928. He studied at Pratt Institute in New York City, where he met Ross F. Littell, Ross Littell and William Katavolos. They started work for Laverne Originals, a furniture company created by Estelle and Erwine Laverne, designing furniture, textiles and dinnerware. While at Laverne, they designed the 'T-chair', which won the A.I.D (American Society of Interior Designers) Award in 1952 for the best furniture design in the United States. The chair has three legs of chrome steel, connected by a T-shaped stretcher in black enamelled steel. Mary Ann Brown Patten
Mary Ann Brown Patten or Patton (April 6, 1837 – March 18, 1861) was the first female commander of an American merchant vessel. She was the wife of Joshua Patten, captain of the merchant clipper ship ''Neptune’s Car.'' The ship was bound around Cape Horn from New York towards San Francisco when Joshua Patten collapsed from fatigue in 1856. His wife took command for 56 days, faced down a mutiny, and successfully managed to navigate the clipper ship into San Francisco. At the time of docking, she was 19 years old and eight months pregnant with her only child. Early life and first voyage Mary Ann Brown was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1837 to George and Elizabeth Brown. She married a young captain named Joshua Adams Patten in Boston on April 1, 1853, just before her 16th birthday.
