Douglas East (ward)
Douglas East is a Ward (electoral subdivision) in Douglas, Isle of Man whose boundaries are the same as the House of Keys constituency Douglas East. The ward was formed for the 2021 local authority elections following the abolition of Derby and Victoria Wards. The ward contains much of the towns central business district including the town's main shopping streets, Strand Street, Duke Street, Castle Street and Victoria Street. Douglas Promenade, and its horse tram service, runs along the length of the ward from the Sea Terminal to the Manx Electric Railway station at the former Summerland site. Notable public buildings include the Manx Parliament building, The Sea Terminal, The Castle Mona and The Courts of Justice. The Little Switzerland area of the ward contain numerous buildings in the Arts and Crafts style of architecture including numerous works by the notable architects Baillie Scott and Armitage Rigby. The Villa Marina is an entertainment venue in Douglas, Isle of Man, which forms part of the wider VillaGaiety complex. Manx Museum
The Manx Museum (Thie Tashtee Vannin) in Douglas, Isle of Man is the national museum of the Isle of Man. It is run by Manx National Heritage. In general, the museum covers 10,000 years the history of the Isle of Man from the Stone Age to the modern era. The museum serves as headquarters of Manx National Heritage. The museum bears no relation to the institution with the same name founded by Trevor Ashe in 1825. Braddan A
Braddan ( gv, Braddan) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle. The Isle of Man TT or Tourist Trophy races are an annual motorcycle racing event run on the Isle of Man in May/June of most years since its inaugural race in 1907. The event is often called one of the most dangerous racing events in the world as many competitors have died. Overview The Isle of Man TT is run in a time-trial format on public roads closed to the public by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). The event consists of one week of practice sessions followed by one week of racing. Baillie Scott
Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott (23 October 1865 – 10 February 1945) was a British architect and artist. Through his long career, he designed in a variety of styles, including a style derived from the Tudor, an Arts and Crafts style reminiscent of Voysey and later the Neo-Georgian. Early life The son of a wealthy Scottish landowner, Scott was born at Beards Hill, St Peter's near Broadstairs, Kent, the second of ten children. He originally studied at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, but, having qualified in 1885, he decided to study architecture instead. He studied briefly in Bath, but his architectural development was especially marked by the 12 years he spent living in the Isle of Man. Castle Mona
Castle Mona is a former private residence later used as a hotel in Douglas, Isle of Man. The house was built between 1803 and 1804 for John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl during his capacity as the Isle of Man's Governor General.Isle of Man Times, Friday, December 31, 1954; Page: 7 Before 1850, Queen Victoria proposed buying it as a more suitable royal residence than Osborne House. After the hotel closed the building fell into disrepair, and subsequent to further disuse was sold at auction in 2018. Manx Electric Railway
The Manx Electric Railway ( Manx: ''Raad Yiarn Lectragh Vannin'') is an electric interurban tramway connecting Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. It connects with the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway at its southern terminus at Derby Castle at the northern end of the promenade in Douglas, and with the Snaefell Mountain Railway at Laxey. Many visitors take an excursion on the trams. It is the oldest electric tram line in the world whose original rolling stock is still in service. History The Manx Electric Railway was built by Alexander Bruce, a banker, Frederick Saunderson, a civil engineer and Alfred Jones Lusty, a land owner, who formed the Douglas Bay Estate company to develop land north of Douglas.
