Douglas, Isle Of Man
Douglas ( gv, Doolish, ) is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of 26,677 (2021). It is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of . The River Douglas forms part of the town's harbour and main commercial port. Douglas was a small settlement until it grew rapidly as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th century. Further population growth came in the following century, resulting during the 1860s in a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor's residence, and finally the seat of the legislature, Tynwald, to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. Douglas East (ward)
Douglas East is a Ward (electoral subdivision) in Douglas, Isle of Man whose boundaries are the same as the House of Keys constituency Douglas East. The ward was formed for the 2021 local authority elections following the abolition of Derby and Victoria Wards. The ward contains much of the towns central business district including the town's main shopping streets, Strand Street, Duke Street, Castle Street and Victoria Street. Douglas Promenade, and its horse tram service, runs along the length of the ward from the Sea Terminal to the Manx Electric Railway station at the former Summerland site. Notable public buildings include the Manx Parliament building, The Sea Terminal, The Castle Mona and The Courts of Justice. Douglas Borough Council
The Douglas Borough Council is the local elected authority for the capital of the Isle of Man, the town of Douglas, and one of the 17 parishes that run local services on the Isle (however, it is the only authority with the "Borough" status). It is the largest local authority, with 12 elected councillors representing the borough. History Throughout the 18th century the settlement of Douglas had grown rapidly as a result of its port providing shelter to the smuggling trade. After the Island was revested by the British Crown and smuggling saw a decline, Douglas became a popular tourist destination for visitors from the United Kingdom. In 1869, the decision was made by Tynwald, the Island's parliament, to move the capital from Castletown in the south of the Island to Douglas. Dominic Delaney
Dominic Francis Kevin Delaney is a former member of the House of Keys and the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man, where he sat as a member of the Alliance for Progressive Government. Brenda Cannell
Brenda Josephine Cannell MHK (born 2 July 1952) is the current member of the House of Keys for Douglas East. She was first elected in the 1996 general election. Career Cannell was a councillor for the Derby Ward of Douglas Town Council from 1992 to '95, serving as Chairman of the Public Health and Housing Committee (1993–94) and sitting on various other committees and groups. She also worked for the Isle of Man branch of Friends of the Earth. In 1996 she was elected as an MHK, and since that time has been Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority from 2002 to '04, and then Chairman of the Planning Committee (2004-2005), amongst many other roles. Liberal Vannin
The Liberal Vannin Party (LVP; gv, Partee Libraalagh Vannin) is a political party in the Isle of Man. It was founded in 2006 by Peter Karran, then an Independent MHK for Onchan. Karran had been, until 2004, a member of the Manx Labour Party. The "Vannin" in the party name is a form of the name of the Isle of Man in the native Manx Gaelic language, while "Liberal" is a reference to the general political position of the party. The party is currently led by Lawrie Hooper MHK. The Liberal Vannin Party put forward several candidates at the 2006 general election and had two MHKs elected. In the 2011 general election, they returned three MHKs. This result was mirrored in the 2016 general election, but one of these subsequently resigned from the party, and one died in 2020. Kevin Woodford (born 4 June 1950) is a British celebrity chef and television personality. Career He originally trained as a chef and then moved into education as a lecturer in professional cookery. After gaining a higher degree in the Management of Organisations he returned to education as Head of Hotel and Catering Studies at a Granville College in Sheffield. He was a Senior Examiner for City and Guilds Professional Cookery Examinations, judge at several International Cookery Competitions and worked as a hotel and restaurant consultant for various national and some International organisations. Kevin is currently working with Stena Line to develop menus for their 7 Irish Sea passenger ferries.
