Doug Shedden (politician)
Douglas James Shedden (17 December 1937 − 13 January 2020) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Bankstown in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1987 to 1999. Shedden was born in Casino, and worked as an electronics firm manager before entering politics. On 7 October 1961 he married Patricia Lewis, with whom he had a daughter. He sat on Bankstown City Council from 1977 to 1987, and was deputy mayor 1980–83. A prominent member of the local Labor Party, he was president of the Greenacre branch for twenty years. In 1987, the member for the local state seat of Bankstown, Ric Mochalski, resigned after being charged with involvement in the collapse of a property trust. Shedden was selected as the Labor candidate for the by-election, and was elected fairly easily, although independent candidate Kevin Ryan achieved 18.6% of the vote. The Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), also known as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party. The parliamentary leader is elected from and by the members of the party caucus, comprising all party members in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The party factions have a strong influence on the election of the leader. The leader's position is dependent on the continuing support of the caucus (and party factions) and the leader may be deposed by failing to win a vote of confidence of parliamentary members. By convention, the premier sits in the Legislative Assembly, and is the leader of the party controlling a majority in that house. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. The City of Bankstown was a local government area in the south-west region of Sydney, Australia, centred on the suburb of Bankstown, from 1895 to 2016. The last Mayor of the City of Bankstown Council was Clr Khal Asfour, a member of the Labor Party. Greenacre, a suburb of local government areas City of Canterbury-Bankstown and the Municipality of Strathfield, is located 17 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district in the state of New South Wales, Australia, and is a part of the South-western Sydney region. Ric Mochalski
Richard Charles "Ric" Mochalski (21 March 1948 – 27 September 2002) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Bankstown in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1986. Mochalski was the son of Czeslaw and Lola Mochalski, and was educated at De La Salle College. He received a Bachelor of Law from the University of Sydney before becoming a solicitor ion 26 July 1974. He also worked as a project manager with a public company. In November 1986, he married Deanne Crosio, with whom he had two children. Following the death in 1980 of Nick Kearns, the Labor member for the state seat of Bankstown, Mochalski was selected as the Labor candidate for the by-election and was easily elected. He held the seat comfortably in 1981 and 1984. In 1984 the Balanced Property Trust collapsed with losses of $50 million. Morris Iemma
Morris Iemma (; born 21 July 1961) is a former Australian politician who was the 40th Premier of New South Wales. He served from 3 August 2005 to 5 September 2008. From Sydney, Iemma attended the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney. A member of the Labor Party, he was first elected to the Parliament of New South Wales at the 1991 state election, having previously worked as a trade union official. From 1999, Iemma was a minister in the third and fourth ministries led by Bob Carr. He replaced Carr as premier and Leader of the New South Wales Labor Party in 2005, following Carr's resignation.
