Doug Fleming
Douglas Norman Fleming (1930-1998) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. A goal-kicking , he played in NSWRFL for Sydney's St. George club, winning the 1949 and 1956 Premierships with them. Fleming also played for Dapto's rugby league club. He was the son of the former St. George Dragons halfback Norm Fleming. Playing career In 1949 Fleming started playing in the NSWRFL's first grade premiership for St. George, forcing the club's Test fullback Noel Pidding onto the wing. At the end of the 1949 NSWRFL season he played for St. George at fullback in their grand final victory. Fleming was the 1955 NSWRFL season's top point-scorer. In 1956 he represented Sydney against the New Zealand Māori rugby league team. Fleming was also the 1956 NSWRFL season's top point scorer with a personal best 189 points, and he played at fullback in St. George's 1956 Grand Final victory. Like its union counterpart, the rugby league team previously competed in international competitions. With some controversy, the team participated in the 2000 World Cup as Aotearoa Māori. The Super League International Board had agreed to give a place in their World Cup to the New Zealand Māori team as they attempted to gain allies during the Super League war. The Sydney Rugby League team, known as the City Rugby League team, or Combined Sydney, or Sydney Firsts, or Sydney Capitals, is a representative rugby league team. From 2021, the men's team is to consist of players selected from the New South Wales Rugby League Ron Massey Cup competition to play against a combined team selected from Country, New South Wales competitions. The women's team is selected on a region of origin basis from the NSWRL Women's Premiership. The 1955 NSWRFL season was the 48th season of the New South Wales Rugby Football League. Ten teams from across Sydney competed for the NSWRFL Premiership J. J. Giltinan Shield during the season, which culminated in a replay of the previous year's Grand Final between the South Sydney and Newtown clubs. Season summary Halfway through the 1955 season Souths were in equal last place having won just three of nine matches. From that point they didn't lose another game, winning nine season encounters in a row before the finals. Eventually they finished fourth. Had they lost a single one of these games they would have missed the finals. In the second last match of the regular season Souths met Manly-Warringah and were behind 4–7 with moments to go. Noel Pidding
Noel Pidding (13 July 1927 – 17 August 2013) was an Australian rugby league footballer. He was a state and national representative, whose goal-kicking prowess enabled him to set a number of long-standing club and Australian point scoring records. His club career was with the St. George Dragons, with whom he won the 1949 premiership, and later at Eastern Suburbs. Career Pidding joined St. George in 1947, immediately cementing a spot in the top-grade as the club's full-back. He made his representative debut for New South Wales that year and in 1948 was selected for Australia, making his test debut against New Zealand in the first test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He had a poor game in Australia's 19-21 loss and was unlucky enough to be starting his career at the same time as the "Immortal" Clive Churchill.
