Doug Becker
Douglas James Becker (born June 27, 1956) is a former American football linebacker who played a single season in the National Football League (NFL) for the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills. Early life Becker was born in Hamilton, Ohio and he attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana where he played college football. Football career Becker was drafted in the 10th round of the 1978 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Becker was among the final group of players waived by the Steelers in getting down to the 45-man roster limit. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears. After appearing in the Bears' season opener he was cut by the team. Linebacker
Linebacker (LB) is a playing position in gridiron football. Linebackers are members of the defensive team, and line up three to five yards behind the line of scrimmage and the defensive linemen. They are the "middle ground" of defenders, playing closer to the line of scrimmage than the defensive backs (secondary), but farther back than the defensive linemen. As such, linebackers play a hybrid role and are often the most versatile players on the defensive side of the ball; they can be asked to play roles similar to either a defensive lineman (such as stopping the runner on a running play) or a defensive back (such as dropping back into pass coverage). The 1978 Buffalo Bills season was the franchise's 9th season in the National Football League, and the 19th overall. The Bills were coming off a season in which they only won three games, making 1978 a slight improvement. Head coach Chuck Knox began his first season with the team, having coached the Los Angeles Rams for the previous five seasons.Knox would coach the Bills for five seasons – through the 1982 season – before leaving for Seattle. It was also Buffalo's first season after the departure of star running back O. J. Simpson, who was traded to San Francisco for five draft picks in the offseason.
