Dota (canton)
Dota is a canton in the San José province of Costa Rica. The head city of the canton is Santa María. It is part of Los Santos Zone, together with Tarrazú and León Cortés Castro. History Dota was created on 23 July 1925 by decree 80. Geography Dota has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. The canton is delineated by the Savegre River on the south and southeast, the Naranjo River on the west and the Cordillera de Talamanca on the north and northeast. Cantons Of Costa Rica
Costa Rica is administratively divided into seven provinces which are subdivided into 83 cantons, and these are further subdivided into districts. Cantons are the only administrative division in Costa Rica that possess local government in the form of municipalities. Each municipality has its own mayor and several representatives, all of them chosen via municipal elections every four years. The original 14 cantons were established in 1848, and the number has risen gradually by the division of existing cantons. Law no. 4366 of 19 August 1969, which outlines the creation of administrative divisions of Costa Rica, states that new cantons may only be created if they have at least one percent of the republic's total population, which was as of the last census (2011). The Costa Rica 2011 Census was undertaken by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (''Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos'' (INEC)) in Costa Rica. Cordillera De Talamanca
The Cordillera de Talamanca is a mountain range that lies in the southeast half of Costa Rica and the far west of Panama. Much of the range and the area around it is included in La Amistad International Park, which also is shared between the two countries. This range in the south of Costa Rica stretches from southwest of San José to beyond the border with Panama and contains the highest peaks of both Costa Rica and Panama, among them Cerro Chirripó at 3,820 m, and the more accessible high peak of Cerro de la Muerte. Much of the Caribbean areas of the range are still unexplored. Exploration and classification The range is covered by the Talamancan montane forests to elevations of approximately 3,000 m. Tarrazú (canton)
Tarrazú is the fifth canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The head city of the canton is San Marcos. It is part of Los Santos Zone, together with Dota and León Cortés Castro. Geography Tarrazú has an area of and a mean elevation of . The Pirrís River (also known as Parrita River) establishes much of the northern boundary of the three-pronged canton, which reaches south across the Coastal Mountain Range to its border with the canton of Aguirre in Puntarenas Province. Tarrazu is located about south of the Capital San Jose, in a pristine valley surrounded by mountains that are part of the Talamanca Sierra in southern Costa Rica.
