Carlos Dorrien
Carlos Dorrien (born 1948 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an American sculptor of Mexican descent. Biography He studied at Montserrat School of Visual Art (now Montserrat College of Art) and at Massachusetts College of Art. He later joined the faculty of Wellesley College, where he has taught for many years. Dorrien specializes in public art installations, creating large-sized abstract sculptures in granite that are often inspired by ancient history, architecture, archaeological ruins, and human figures. They are often designed to be placed in nature. His work is scattered throughout New England, including the DeCordova Museum in Massachusetts, Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, South Boston Maritime Park, Harvard Square, MBTA Alewife station, Lowell, and several other locations in the greater Boston area; most recently, at the Stamford Courthouse in Stamford, Connecticut. Catharina Helena Dörrien
Catharina Helena Dörrien (1 March 1717, in Hildesheim – 8 June 1795, in Dillenburg) was a German botanist and teacher, recognized as "the most celebrated German-speaking female naturalist of the period". She was a talented artist who painted over 1,400 watercolor botanical illustrations, and published a catalogue of plants of the Principality of Orange-Nassau in 1777. She was also the first woman to name a fungal taxon. Early life Dörrien was the daughter of Pastor Johann Jonas Dörrien and Lucia Catharina (née Schrader), and was the second of their four children. The pastor educated his children at home, including in botany. Dörrien took over the running of the family home after her mother died in 1733, but her father died four years later. Gary John Dorrien (born March 21, 1952) is an American social ethicist and Theology, theologian. He is the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York and Professor of Religion at Columbia University, both in New York City, and the author of 18 books on ethics, social theory, philosophy, theology, politics, and intellectual history. Prior to joining the faculty at Union and Columbia in 2005, Dorrien taught at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, where he served as Parfet Distinguished Professor and as Dean of Stetson Chapel. An Episcopal priest, he has taught as the Paul E. Raither Distinguished Scholar at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and as Horace De Y. George Dorrien (1769 – 10 February 1835) was Governor of the Bank of England from 1818 to 1820. Family and early life George Dorrien was born in 1769, the fourth son of John and Ann Dorrien. John Dorrien (-1784) was a merchant banker from London. His family were originally German Lutherans, linked to the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity the Less in London. John Dorrien was a partner in the bank of Dorrien, Rucker and Carlton and the chairman of the East India Company. George Dorrien married Grace Ashurst (1773—1826), daughter of Sir William Ashurst. Career Dorrien joined the Bank of England's board of directors in 1794, and served during the Panic of 1796–1797 when the Bank enacted a stoppage on specie payments at the start of the Restriction period. Magens Dorrien Magens (ca 1762 – 30 May 1849) of Hammerwood Lodge, East Sussex, was an English banker, Member of Parliament and author. In early life he was known as Magens Dorrien. Dorrien Gardens is a sports ground in West Perth, Western Australia primarily used for soccer. It is the home ground of Perth SC. History In 1951, the City of Perth allocated the ground to Azzurri ahead of their first season in the first tier of Western Australian soccer. The Dorrien Gardens Reserve was further developed in the 1970s when the local council resumed land from a series of properties on Cowle Street. In 1987, Perth Italia – a club formed from the merger of Azzurri, East Fremantle Tricolore and Balcatta Etna – chose Dorrien Gardens as their home ground.
