Dorothy West (August 29, 1891 – December 11, 1980) was an American stage and film actress and radio performer. Early life She grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. Career West was a star in Biograph silent films in New York. She later relocated to Hollywood with a group of D.W. Griffith stars that included Mary Pickford, Marion Leonard, Florence Barker, and Mack Sennett in 1909. West, Pickford, Pickford's brother Jack, and Effie Johnson boarded together. She joined a stock theatre company in Mount Vernon, Illinois; then joined the Pitt Stock Players in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and in also performed in theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. West returned to film several years later. West received positive notice for her work in Griffith's '' His Mother's Scarf'' (1911) '' Swords and Hearts'' (1911) and ''The Eternal Grind'' (1916). West left films again to tour in theatre productions in Europe after World War I with the American Army of Occupation, including in Germany. ...

''The Eternal Grind'' is a 1916 silent drama film directed by John B. O'Brien, and starring Mary Pickford. The film is inspired by the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which took place in 1911. Plot Louise (Pickford) is a sewing-machine girl in a sweatshop in New York City. She lives together with her sisters Amy (Loretta Blake) and Jane (Dorothy West) and are all deprived by bad conditions at work and sickness. Louise tries for the three of them to survive and regards herself as the keeper of her sisters. Meanwhile, she stands up to her bosses and complains about the dreadful circumstances they work in. When Amy is seduced by the son of the shop-owner, Louise butts in and stops the romance. He eventually abandons Amy and becomes seriously injured in a cave-in. ''An Awful Moment'' is a 1908 American silent short drama film directed by D. W. Griffith. A print of the "one-reeler" is preserved in the film archive of the Library of Congress. Plot Judge Mowbray sentences a man, at which a gypsy woman protests. The Judge later goes home and sees his wife and daughter. However the gypsy woman breaks into his house. She knocks out Mrs. Mowbray, gags her and ties her to a chair. She sets up a gun to shoot her dead when the door is opened. However the daughter wakes up and is able to tell her father, who saves his wife, and the gypsy woman is arrested. ''The Girl and the Outlaw'' is a 1908 American silent short Western film directed by D. W. Griffith for American Mutoscope & Biograph Company. It starred Charles Inslee as the outlaw but other members of the cast are largely unconfirmed. Florence Lawrence and Mack Sennett made early appearances. Plot A girl called Nellie falls for Preston, a notorious outlaw who leads a band of Native American renegades. Preston treats her badly and leaves her for dead but she is rescued by a mountain woman whom she had befriended. They escape together, sharing a horse, but Nellie is mortally wounded. As Preston tries to overtake them, the mountain woman stabs him in the chest and he is killed. The renegades stop and then ride away. Nellie dies soon after reaching her father's cabin.
