Dorothy Dunckley
Dorothy Harriette Dunckley (27 February 1890 – 7 March 1972) was an Australian make-up artist, actress and writer. Life Born Dorothy Harriette Fraser in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria on 27 February 1890, Dunckley was the daughter of Mary Charlotte (née Cook) and John Fraser. In childhood she relocated to Perth, Western Australia with her family. She went to London and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1909–1910. She had hoped to become an actress but a recurrent throat problem and operations failed to restore her voice adequately. During WWI she produced and directed amateur theatre performances to raise money "the boys at the front". In 1924 she was working as secretary for the Perth Repertory Club but, following a severe illness, moved to Melbourne in 1925. The following year she began writing sketches for broadcast on 3LO. 10th Light Horse Regiment (Australia)
The 10th Light Horse Regiment is a "mounted infantry" regiment of the Australian Army Reserve, raised in Western Australia (WA). While the name of the 10th Light Horse originated in the first months of World War I, the regiment traces its ceremonial lineage to mounted infantry units of the Colonial militia of Western Australia, raised during the late 19th century, such as the Western Australian Mounted Infantry. Bruce Rock, Western Australia
Bruce Rock is a town in the eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approximately east of Perth and southwest of Merredin. It is the main town in the Shire of Bruce Rock. History Originally known as Nunagin or Noonegin, the name of the town led to confusion between other towns such as Narrogin and Nungarin. The name was changed to Bruce Rock after the large granite feature located close to the town. The townsite was gazetted in 1913. The rock was named after sandalwood cutter, John Rufus Bruce, who worked in the area in 1879. The heritage listed shire office building was opened in January 1929. ''Thoroughbred'' is a 1936 Australian race-horse drama film directed by Ken G. Hall, partly based on the life and career of Phar Lap. Hollywood star Helen Twelvetrees was imported to Australia to appear in the film. The film also stars Frank Leighton and John Longden. Plot summary A Canadian horse trainer, Joan, is the adopted daughter of horse trainer and breeder Ma Dawson. She buys an unwanted thoroughbred colt named Stormalong. Joan nurses the horse back to health with the help of Ma's son Tommy, and Stormalong starts to win races. He becomes the favourite to win the Melbourne Cup which attracts the interest of a gambling syndicate who try to dope the horse and kill it in a stable fire. They then kidnap Tommy prior to the race. Stormalong manages to participate in the Cup, and although is mortally wounded by a sniper, lives long enough to come first place. Tommy escapes and helps the police capture the gangsters.
