Doris Piserchia
Doris Piserchia (born Doris Summers, October 11, 1928 – September 15, 2021) was an American science fiction writer who was born and raised in Fairmont, West Virginia. She served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 and after that took courses toward a Master's degree in educational psychology. She did not begin publishing until 1966. Her stories have an interest in aliens and have been termed "darkly comic" by admirers. Despite her military experience, age, and preference for older SF, she is often associated with the New Wave. Related to that she has a story in ''The Last Dangerous Visions''. She has also been of interest to those in Feminist science fiction. She did not publish any work after 1983,Clute and Nicholls 1995, p. 934. shortly before her adult daughter died suddenly, leaving her with a three-year-old granddaughter to raise. Fairmont, West Virginia
Fairmont is a city in and county seat of Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 18,313 at the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Fairmont Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Marion County, and is a principal city of the larger Morgantown–Fairmont Combined Statistical Area. History Beginnings In the eighteenth century, the earliest development of Fairmont consisted of subsistence farming settlements. In 1789, Boaz Fleming, a Revolutionary War veteran, migrated to western Virginia and purchased a 254-acre farm from Jonathan Bozarth. In 1808, Fleming made his annual trek to Clarksburg to pay his brother's Harrison County taxes. While in Clarksburg, Fleming attended a social gathering that included his cousin Dolley Madison, wife of President James Madison. Peter Nicholls (writer)
Peter Douglas Nicholls (8 March 1939 – 6 March 2018) was an Australian literary scholar and critic. He was the creator and a co-editor of ''The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction'' with John Clute. Early career Born in Australia's state of Victoria in Melbourne, he spent two decades from 1968 to 1988 as an expatriate, first in the USA, and then the UK. Nicholls' early career was as a literary academic, originally with the University of Melbourne. He first travelled to the USA in 1968 with a Harkness Fellowship in movie making, and has scripted television documentaries. His significant contributions to science fiction scholarship and criticism began during 1971, when he became the first Administrator of the Science Fiction Foundation (UK), a title he had until 1977. He was editor of its journal, '' Foundation: The Review of Science Fiction'', from 1974 to 1978.
