Doris Day (song)
"Doris Day" is a song from 1982 by Dutch band Doe Maar. It was the title-track off their third album '' Doris Day en Andere Stukken'' and became their first top 10-hit. Bass-player Henny Vrienten, frontman alongside pianist Ernst Jansz, wrote "Doris Day" as a complaint about TV-boredom (which includes the screening of a Doris Day-movie) best tackled by pressing the off-button and going out. The original lyrics also mentioned movie-expert Simon van Collem, but this was altered to ''"ein Wiener Operette"'' when he appeared to be the father of the band's new drummer Rene (1961). "Doris Day" catapulted the otherwise thirtysomething Doe Maar into superstardom, but overexposure and creative exhaustion would split them up two years later. Vrienten, who went on to compose TV- and movie-soundtracks, was quoted in 1985 : "You can flush 'Doris Day' down the toilet anytime you like; it's the worst song I ever wrote. Doe Maar
Doe Maar was a Dutch ska band with punk and reggae influences whose career peaked from 1978 to 1984. They are one of the most successful pop bands in Dutch history. 'Doe maar' translates as ''go ahead'' or ''just do it''. History Early years and debut album Doe Maar was formed in 1978 by Ernst Jansz (CCC Inc., The Slumberlandband). Piet Dekker, with whom Jansz played in The Slumberlandband (1975) and The Rumbones (1977), introduced him to Jan Hendriks and Carel Copier in the spring of 1978 at the farm of Gé van de Donk, who later became their sound engineer. Recordings from this meeting exist on which they played, without any rehearsal, all the Dutch-language songs Jansz had written at that time. Copier came up with the idea of the name after hearing the never officially recorded song "Doe maar". Henny Vrienten
Henny Vrienten (27 July 1948 – 25 April 2022) was a Dutch musician best known as the singer and bassist of the popular 1980s ska pop band Doe Maar. He also composed television and film scores. Biography Early days Vrienten began his career in the late 1960s as a member of the local outfit Les Cruches. In the early 1970s, he wrote songs for others and released his first single as Ruby Carmichael. In 1977, Vrienten released his debut solo album, ''Paul Santos'', which he recorded with US producer Tom Salisbury. "Lift Me Up Higher" was extracted as a single. Also in the 1970s, he began working with singer-songwriter Boudewijn de Groot in the studio and on stage. While recording the 1975 album ''Waar ik woon en wie ik ben'', Vrienten met keyboard player Ernst Jansz and drummer Johnny Lodewijks. The latter suggested they form a reggae band. Ernst Gideon Jansz (born May 24, 1948 in Amsterdam) is one of the founding members and frontmen of Doe Maar. Doe Maar is a Dutch 1980s ska/reggae band, and is considered one of the most successful bands in Dutch pop history. His father, born in Semarang on Java, is an Indo people, Indo (Dutch (ethnic group), Dutch-Indonesian), who went to the Netherlands in 1932 after finishing his study at the Batavia, Dutch East Indies, Batavia HBS to continue his higher education there. Once Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands his father was involved in the Dutch resistance movement, until he was captured and interned in a German concentration camp. After the war he became one of the few Indo advocates for an independent Indonesia. In his view the principle of liberty and independence applied to both situations: Dutch independence from Nazi Germany and Indonesian independence from the colonial Netherlands.
