Dordogne (river)
The Dordogne (; ) is a river in south-central and southwest France. It is long. The Dordogne and its watershed were designated Man and the Biosphere Programme, Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO on 11 July 2012. Geography The river rises on the flanks of the Puy de Sancy at above sea level in the mountains of Auvergne, from the confluence of two small torrents above the town of Le Mont-Dore (France), Le Mont-Dore: the ''Dore'' and the ''Dogne''. It flows generally west nearly through the Limousin (région), Limousin and Périgord regions before flowing into the Gironde estuary, Gironde, its common estuary with the Garonne, at the Bec d'Ambès ("Ambès beak"), north of the city of Bordeaux. Périgord
Périgord ( , ; ; or ) is a natural region and former province of France, which corresponds roughly to the current Dordogne department, now forming the northern part of the administrative region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is divided into four areas called the Périgord Noir (Black), named so for the truffles that can be found there, the Périgord Blanc (White), for chalk cliffs and quarries, the Périgord Vert (Green), for forests and forestry and the Périgord Pourpre (Purple), for wine and viticulture. The geography and natural resources of Périgord make it a region rich in history and wildlife, and the newly created Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin aims to conserve it as such. Argentat
Argentat () is a former commune in the Corrèze department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of central France. On 1 January 2017, it was merged into the new commune Argentat-sur-Dordogne. Geography Argentat is situated on the river Dordogne, 30 km south-east of Tulle, 30 km east by south-east of Brive-la-Gaillarde, and some 15 km south-west of Saint-Privat. Access to the commune is by road D1120 from Saint-Chamant in the north-west passing through the town and continuing south-east to Montvert. The D980 goes from the town north-east to Saint-Privat. Souillac, Lot
Souillac (; Languedocien: ''Solhac'') is a commune in the Lot department in south-western France, on the river Dordogne. It is the site of the Brive–Souillac Airport, which opened in 2010. The town hosts an annual jazz festival in July. The abbey church has famous Romanesque carvings. History Souillac grew up around an abbey dependent on the Benedictine monastery of Aurillac (Cantal). Two donors help start the community, Count Geraud, Abbot of Aurillac and Viscount Frotard in 909. When the Benedictines settled in the plain of Souillès, so named from a local word "souilh" meaning ''muddy and marshy place where wild boars wallowed'', they replaced a community supposedly founded there by Saint Eloi. The monks drained and transformed the swamp into a rich estate. The stone abbey church Abbatiale Sainte Marie was built in the 1100s and was completed in 1145.
