''Doot-Doot'' is the debut studio album by Welsh new wave and synth-pop band Freur, released in 1983 by CBS Records.. Cherry Red Records. The cassette version of the album included four extra tracks. The lead single, "Doot-Doot", peaked at No. 59 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 17 in New Zealand. The song "Doot-Doot" has appeared in several films, to include Let Me In (2010) and Vanilla Sky (2001). CD release The album was unavailable on CD until the 1993 reissue by Oglio Records in the United States. The album has since been reissued twice in the United Kingdom, in 2000 by Columbia Records and subsequently in 2009 by Cherry Red Records as '' Get Us out of Here/Doot-Doot'' – which includes both Freur albums on one CD. Freur
Freur was a Welsh new wave and synth-pop band featuring Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who went on to form the electronic band Underworld. It was their second band, following their art school collaboration, the Screen Gemz. Their best known song is "Doot-Doot", which peaked at No. 59 on the UK Singles Chart. History The band was formed in the early 1980s in Cardiff, Wales by Hyde, Smith and Alfie Thomas. It originally had only a graphic 'squiggle' for a name. In 1983, after recruiting John Warwicker and drummer Bryn Burrows (formerly of the Fabulous Poodles), they got a recording contract with CBS Records. As the label insisted on a pronounceable name, the band made the compromise that the squiggle was pronounced ''Freur''. Get Us Out Of Here
''Get Us out of Here'' is the second and final studio album by Freur and was released in the Netherlands and Germany in 1986. The cassette version of the album included five extra tracks. CD release The album was unavailable on CD until 2009 when Cherry Red Records released ''Get Us out of Here/Doot-Doot'', which includes both Freur albums on one CD. In order to fit both albums onto one CD over two minutes of music has been removed from ''Get Us out of Here''; with the tracks "Emeralds and Pearls", "The Devil and Darkness", "The Piano Song", "Happiness" and "Endless Groove" all being faded out prematurely. ''Music from Vanilla Sky'' is the soundtrack to the 2001 film ''Vanilla Sky''. The album has been subject to critical acclaim from its reviewers, being called "a music masterpiece" by ''The New York Times''. Andy Sheppard
Andy Sheppard (born 20 January 1957) is a British jazz saxophonist and composer. He has been awarded several prizes at the British Jazz Awards, and has worked with some notable figures in contemporary jazz, including Gil Evans, Carla Bley, George Russell and Steve Swallow. In 2019 he was presented the degree of Doctor of Music ''honoris causa'' by the University of Bristol. Biography Sheppard was born in Warminster, Wiltshire, England, in 1957. At the age of 19 he emerged as a musician in the Salisbury-based contemporary quartet Sphere in the late 1970s, gigging only three weeks after picking up the saxophone. He honed his skills in the wine bars and jazz clubs of the UK and Europe in the early 1980s. He also played with world music groups and with more established improvisers such as Keith Tippett. Karl Hyde
Karl Hyde (born 10 May 1957) is an English musician and artist. He is a founding member of British electronic group Underworld. Hyde has also released a solo album, made albums with Brian Eno and Matthew Herbert, and contributed towards the score for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony alongside Rick Smith. He is a founding member of the multi-discipline design and film collective Tomato and has published several books. Career Hyde moved to Cardiff in the late 1970s to study at Cardiff College of Art. Oglio Records is an American record company started in 1993 by Carl Caprioglio. The label issues compilations of rare 1980s modern rock and new wave songs, many previously unreleased on CD. In addition to releasing new material by artists such as BigBang, Nerf Herder and Wesley Willis, the label has also re-released albums by artists such as Brian Wilson and Barnes & Barnes. Rick Smith (musician)
Richard Smith (born 25 May 1959) is a Welsh musician and composer. He is a founding member of British electronic music group Underworld and an acclaimed composer, having collaborated extensively with director Danny Boyle, most notably as the musical director for the London 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony, alongside Underworld's Karl Hyde. He is also a founding member of the multi-discipline design and film collective Tomato. Career Smith left a bank clerk job in Llanelli to do an electronic and electrical engineering degree; however, he dropped out during his finals after being asked to join Hyde’s band The Screen Gemz. In 1983 they formed Freur and recorded two albums for CBS Records International. The group disbanded in 1986. Brian Griffin (born 13 April 1948) is a British photographer. His portraits of 1980s pop musicians lead to him being named the "photographer of the decade" by ''The Guardian'' in 1989. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Arts Council, British Council, Victoria and Albert Museum and National Portrait Gallery, London.
