Doole, Texas
Doole is an unincorporated community in McCulloch County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 74 in 1990. Rodeo performer and promoter Dan Collins Taylor was born in Doole in 1923, and died there in 2010. Geography Doole is situated at the junction of Farm Roads 503 and 765 in northwestern McCulloch County, about 12 miles north of U.S. Highway 87 and 28 miles northwest of Brady. The nearest large city is San Angelo, 55 miles west of Doole. History A ranching community called Gansel, after a prominent local family, was the area's first settlement. It developed around Crossroads School, which had moved to the area from Fort Concho in 1908. Brady Independent School District
Brady Independent School District is a public school district based in Brady, Texas (USA). In addition to Brady, the district also serves the town of Melvin. Located in McCulloch County, a small portion of Brady ISD extends into eastern Concho County. 1950s Texas Drought
The 1950s Texas drought was a period between 1949 and 1957 in which the state received 30 to 50% less rain than normal, while temperatures rose above average. During this time, Texans experienced the second-, third-, and eighth-driest single years ever in the state – 1956, 1954, and 1951, respectively. The drought was described by a state water official as "the most costly and one of the most devastating droughts in 600 years." Effects The drought began gradually, and some sources claim it began as early as 1947, starting with a decrease in rainfall in Central Texas. By the summer of 1951, the entire state was in drought. Melvin is a town in McCulloch County, Texas, United States. Its population was 179 at the 2010 census. Geography Melvin is located at (31.197066, –99.580582). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. Fort Concho
Fort Concho is a former United States Army installation and National Historic Landmark District located in San Angelo, Texas. It was established in November 1867 at the confluence of the North and South Concho Rivers, on the routes of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route and Goodnight–Loving Trail, and was an active military base for the next 22 years. Fort Concho was the principal base of the 4th Cavalry from 1867 to 1875 and then the "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 10th Cavalry from 1875 to 1882. The troops stationed at Fort Concho participated in Ranald S. Mackenzie's 1872 campaign, the Red River War in 1874, and the Victorio Campaign of 1879–1880. The fort was abandoned in June 1889, and over the next 20 years was divided into residences and businesses, with the buildings repurposed or recycled for their materials.
