Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal (6 August 182021 January 1914), known as Sir Donald A. Smith between May 1886 and August 1897, was a Scottish-born Canadian businessman who became one of the British Empire's foremost builders and philanthropists. He became commissioner, governor and principal shareholder of the Hudson's Bay Company. He was president of the Bank of Montreal and with his first cousin, George Stephen (later Lord Mount Stephen), co-founded the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba and afterwards represented Montreal in the House of Commons of Canada. He was Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1896 to 1914. He was chairman of Burmah Oil and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Donald William Smith is a Canadian author who is Professor Emeritus at Carleton University, a specialist of Québec literature and singer-songwriters, and of the French language as it is spoken in North America (Québec, French Canada including Acadia, Louisiana). Smith is the author of seventeen books and numerous articles published in scholarly reviews, newspapers and magazines. Several of these articles have been reproduced on line by the Canadian scholarly publishing platform Érudit. Life Born in Toronto in 1946, Donald Smith holds an honours BA (1968) in French from Glendon College at York University. Zaid Abdul-Aziz (born Donald A. Smith; April 7, 1946) is an American former professional basketball player. He was known as Don Smith until he changed his name to Zaid Abdul-Aziz in 1976 after he converted to Islam. Donald Smith (7 July 1905 – 7 May 1985) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He became a dentist, with education from Mount Allison University and Dalhousie University. He attained a DDS degree by 1928. From 1935 to 1939, Smith served as a municipal councillor for Liverpool, Nova Scotia. He was first elected to Parliament at the Queens—Shelburne riding in the 1949 general election. He was the riding's only member, as the electoral district was created in 1947 and the changes undone in 1952. Smith did not seek another Parliamentary term in the 1953 election. On 28 July 1955, he was appointed to the Senate and remained in that capacity until 7 July 1980. Smith's father was Jordan W. Donald Joseph Smith (19 October 1933 - 7 April 2015) was an English cricketer. Smith was a right-handed batsman who bowled left-arm fast-medium. He was born in Stockport, Cheshire. Smith made his debut in county cricket for Cheshire in the 1952 Minor Counties Championship against the Yorkshire Second XI. In 1955, he made his first-class debut for Cambridge University against Surrey in 1955. He made 27 further first-class appearances for the university, the last of which came against Surrey in 1957. In his 28 first-class matches for the university, he took 73 wickets at an average of 31.46, with best figures of 7/55. These figures, one of two five wicket hauls he took, came against Gloucestershire in 1955. With the bat, he scored 128 runs at a batting average of 8.00, with a high score of 18 not out.
