Donald Smith (cricketer, Born 1923)
Donald Victor Smith (14 June 1923 – 10 January 2021) was an English cricketer, who played in three Tests for England in 1957. He was born in Broadwater, Sussex, England. The cricket writer, Colin Bateman, commented that "Sri Lanka's historic first victory over England early in 1993 will have given at least one English Test player a certain amount of satisfaction. Don Smith, a steady left-handed opener capable of some useful seam bowling, became Sri Lanka's national coach in the late 1980s". Life and career An all-rounder who played for Sussex as a left-handed batsman and, later in his career, a left arm medium pacer, he scored over 1,500 runs in 1950 to establish himself in their first team. Equally adept at opening the batting, or scoring runs in the middle order as required, Smith's bowling blossomed at the age of 32 when he took 73 wickets, and more good form in 1957, saw him selected for England against the West Indies. Broadwater, West Sussex
Broadwater is a neighbourhood of Worthing, in the borough of Worthing in West Sussex, England. Situated between the South Downs and the English Channel, Broadwater was once a parish in its own right and included Worthing when the latter was a small fishing hamlet. Before its incorporation into the Borough of Worthing in 1902 Broadwater also included the manor of Offington to the north. It borders Tarring to the west, Sompting to the east, and East Worthing to the south-east. Broadwater Green Broadwater is centred on a large triangular grassy area known as 'Broadwater Green' there is a small cricket pavilion to the south side which is home to the Broadwater Cricket Club the oldest cricket club in Worthing who have been playing on the green since 1771. Ian Thomson (cricketer)
Norman Ian Thomson (23 January 1929 – 1 August 2021) was an English cricketer who played in five Tests for England in 1964 and 1965. Thomson was only weeks away from his 36th birthday when he was selected for Test duties, a recognition of his performances in county cricket. Life and career Born 23 January 1929 in Walsall, Staffordshire, Thomson grew up in Essex. After he finished his National Service, his family moved to Sussex, where he joined the county team, playing his first match in 1952. A medium-fast right-arm swing and seam bowler of accuracy and consistency, and a lower-order batsman, he soon became a regular member of the team. He took more than 100 wickets in every season from 1953 to 1964. The later part of Thomson's career coincided with the first one-day competition. Reginald Thomas Simpson (27 February 1920 – 22 November 2013) was an English cricketer, who played in 27 Test matches from 1948 to 1955. Life and career Born in Sherwood, Nottingham, England, Simpson attended Nottingham High School. At the age of 13, having participated in an opening partnership of 467 with Henry Betts in a house game, Simpson was selected for the High School first team. He first gave notice of his abilities at a higher level scoring 134 not out for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club against the RAF at Trent Bridge in 1940. During the war he served as a pilot with the RAF but also took the opportunity to play cricket for the RAF alongside the likes of Wally Hammond and Bill Edrich, for the Europeans in India alongside Joe Hardstaff junior and Denis Compton and occasional games for Notts.
