Donald Oesterling
Donald Oswald Oesterling (June 2, 1927 – January 20, 2013) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 21st district from 1965 to 1972. Early life Donald O. Oesterling was born in Butler, Pennsylvania to Victor K. and Margorie (Oswald) Oesterling. He attended local schools and during World War II, enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve and served in the Atlantic Theater. He received an undergraduate degree from Capitol University and worked for a while as a radio commentator. Career He was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate for the 21st district and served from 1965 to 1972. In 1971, he sponsored the Oesterling amendment which legalized abortion in cases of rape and incest. Butler, Pennsylvania
Butler is a city and the county seat of Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located north of Pittsburgh and is part of the Greater Pittsburgh region. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 13,502. History Butler was named for Maj. Gen. Richard Butler,''An Historical Gazetteer of Butler County, Pennsylvania'', p. 118 who fell at the Battle of the Wabash, also known as St. Clair's Defeat, in western Ohio in 1791. In 1803, John and Samuel Cunningham became the first settlers in the village of Butler. After settling in Butler, the two brothers laid out the community by drawing up plots of land for more incoming settlers. By 1817, the community was incorporated into a borough. The first settlers were of Irish or Scottish descent and were driving westward from Connecticut. The Pennsylvania State Senate is the upper house of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, the Pennsylvania state legislature. The State Senate meets in the State Capitol building in Harrisburg. Senators are elected for four year terms, staggered every two years such that half of the seats are contested at each election. Even numbered seats and odd numbered seats are contested in separate election years. The president pro tempore of the Senate becomes the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in the event of the sitting lieutenant governor's removal, resignation or death. The Wilkes University Election Statistics Project is a free online resource documenting Pennsylvania political election results dating back to 1796. Currently, the database documents Pennsylvania's county-level vote totals for President, Governor, United States Senator, and Congressional elections back to 1796. The database also contains directories for members of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and the Pennsylvania General Assembly, dating back to 1682. According to the database's designer, Wilkes University Professor Harold E. Cox, "No other state has anything like it." The project's impetus began in 1996, when Cox inquired about 19th century election statistics, only to find that the data would cost $1,000.
