Donald Friell McLeod
Sir Donald Friell McLeod (6 May 1810 – 28 November 1872) was an Anglo-Indian civil servant who served as Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab between 1865 and 1870. He was one of the founders of Lahore Oriental College, now part of the Punjab University, and is generally remembered as a philanthropic administrator and promoter of education, of both Oriental studies by Europeans, and European literature studies in India. Early life He was born at Fort William, Calcutta, then part of the Bengal Presidency. His father was Duncan McLeod (1780-1856), a Scotsman who later became lieutenant general of the Bengal engineers, and achieved distinction designing the Hazarduari Palace. His mother was Henrietta Friell, who descended maternally from the Boileau of Castelnau family. In 1814 McLeod was sent to stay with his grandfather in Scotland. 1988 French Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1988 French motorcycle Grand Prix was the eleventh round of the 1988 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 22–24 July 1988 at the 5.81 km (3.61 mi) Paul Ricard Circuit. 500 cc race report Frenchman Christian Sarron claimed his 5th pole position in a row on his Yamaha YZR500, and his last ever in 500 GP. Like most of the mid-field, Niall Mackenzie (Honda) jumped the start and raced to the lead, but the race was allowed to continue and no penalties were handed out by race officials. Professor Donald Macleod FRCSEd, FFAEM (Hon), FFSEM (Hon), FISM (4 March 1941- 13 November 2022) was a Scottish former rugby union player and a former President of the Scottish Rugby Union. A retired surgeon, he was the Scotland national rugby union team doctor for many years. Medical career He worked as a consultant general surgeon at Bangour General Hospital, West Lothian from 1975 to 2001, and as associate postgraduate dean of surgery for south-east Scotland from 1993 to 2004. He was also an honorary professor of sports medicine at Aberdeen University from 1998 to 2003. Pipe Major Donald MacLeod (14 August 1916 – 29 June 1982) was a Scottish bagpiper, British Army Pipe major, composer and bagpipe instructor. Life Donald MacLeod ("Wee Donald") was born in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis on 14 August 1916. Macleod was mentored and tutored by John Morrison, who took him to his first Northern Meeting. He was also tutored by Willie Ross, and every week for 27 years by John MacDonald of Inverness. He joined the British Army in 1937, and went to France in 1940 with the 2nd Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders in the British Expeditionary Force. Captured as a prisoner of war during the surrender at St. Valery-en-Caux, he escaped during the march to Germany and returned to France in 1944 as pipe major of the 7th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders. Donald Martin "Smokey" McLeod (August 24, 1946 – March 11, 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played briefly in the National Hockey League and six full seasons in the World Hockey Association between 1970 and 1978. Playing career McLeod's professional career began with several teams in the minor Central Professional Hockey League and American Hockey League, before being called up for two stints in the NHL, totaling 18 games, with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers over the 1970–71 and 1971–72 seasons. With the formation of the WHA in 1972, McLeod was signed by the Houston Aeros, where he played two seasons. The 1973-74 season was his finest year. He was the second winner of the Ben Hatskin Trophy as the WHA's top goalie and was named to the First All-Star team. Lieutenant-General Sir Donald Kenneth McLeod (19 June 1885 – 25 October 1958) was a British Indian Army officer. Military career McLeod was commissioned into the Indian Army on 29 November 1904. He earned recognition with his appointment as a companion of the Distinguished Service Order in the 1917 New Year Honours during the First World War. He became commanding officer Guides Cavalry in India in 1928, commander of the 4th (Secunderabad) Cavalry Brigade in 1933 and commander of the 1st (Risalpur) Cavalry Brigade in 1934. He went on to be Deputy Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Northern Command, India in 1937 and, having been appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath on 11 May 1937, he became General Officer Commanding Burma Command in January 1939 before retiring in 1942. Upper Canada Rebellion
The Upper Canada Rebellion was an insurrection against the oligarchic government of the British colony of Upper Canada (present-day Ontario) in December 1837. While public grievances had existed for years, it was the rebellion in Lower Canada (present-day Quebec), which started the previous month, that emboldened rebels in Upper Canada to revolt. The Upper Canada Rebellion was largely defeated shortly after it began, although resistance lingered until 1838. While it shrank, it became more violent, mainly through the support of the Hunters' Lodges, a secret United States-based militia that emerged around the Great Lakes, and launched the Patriot War in 1838.
