Donald Jason Flamm
Donald J. Flamm (December 11, 1899 – Feb 15, 1998) was an American radio pioneer. He worked for the Shubert Brothers and for such stars as Al Jolson and Milton Berle.New York Times, obituary, 21 February 1998 He owned numerous radio stations beginning with New York City’s WMCA, and is credited with founding ABSIE (American Broadcasting Station in Europe), the precursor of the Voice of America. Early life Flamm was born in Pittsburgh but attended New York City schools. Career in broadcasting From a young age, Flamm was very active in the New York cultural scene. He produced plays and published a book of poems (1926). When radio station WMCA began operating in February 1925, Flamm produced much of the on-air content. Father Coughlin
Charles Edward Coughlin ( ; October 25, 1891 – October 27, 1979), commonly known as Father Coughlin, was a Canadian-American Catholic priest based in the United States near Detroit. He was the founding priest of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Dubbed "The Radio Priest", he was one of the first political leaders to use radio to reach a mass audience. During the 1930s, when the U.S. population was about 120 million, an estimated 30 million listeners tuned to his weekly broadcasts. Coughlin was born in Canada to working-class Irish Catholic parents. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1916, and in 1923 he was assigned to the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan. WPAT (930 AM), is a radio station licensed to Paterson, New Jersey, with a brokered programming format. WPAT is owned by Multicultural Broadcasting, and its studios are located in New York City, in Manhattan's Financial District. The station's four transmitting towers are located in Clifton, New Jersey. History WPAT first went on the air in 1941, from studios at 7 Ellison Street in Paterson. In December 1949, it began broadcasting 24 hours a day with power increased to 5,000 watts using a directional antenna. Air personalities then included John Henry Faulk. Westport is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, along the Long Island Sound within Connecticut's Gold Coast. It is northeast of New York City. The town had a population of 27,141 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. History The earliest known inhabitants of the Westport area as identified through archaeological finds date back 7,500 years.
