Donald Horne MacFarlane
Sir Donald Horne Macfarlane (July 1830 – 2 June 1904) was a Scottish merchant who entered politics and became a Member of Parliament (MP), firstly as a Home Rule League MP in Ireland and then as Liberal and Crofters Party MP in Scotland. Macfarlane was born in Scotland, the youngest son of Allan Macfarlane, J.P., of Caithness and his wife Margaret Horne. He became an East Indies merchant as a tea trader and indigo plantation owner. While in India he was a passionate amateur photographer. He experimented freely and produced semi-abstract images. At the 1880 general election Macfarlane was elected as a Home Rule Member of Parliament for County Carlow. The Carlow constituency lost one of its two seats under the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, and at the 1885 general election Macfarlane stood instead for the Crofters Party in Argyllshire. Donald Ninian Nicol JP DL (3 October 1843 – 27 July 1903) was a British barrister and politician, who served as the Unionist Party MP for Argyllshire 1895 to 1903. Early life and education Nicol was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, in October 1843 to a Scottish father & English mother. He was educated in Scotland, first at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh and at the University of Glasgow. In 1863 he entered Queen's College, Oxford, achievieng a BA in 1867 and an MA in 1872. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1870, and worked on the Northern Circuit. Political career Nicol stood for election as the Conservative candidate for Argyllshire in the 1895 general election, where he defeated the incumbent Liberal MP Donald Horne Macfarlane. Lieutenant-Colonel John Wingfield Malcolm, 1st Baron Malcolm of Poltalloch, (16 April 1833 – 6 March 1902) was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Background and education Malcolm was the son of John Malcolm, 14th feudal baron of Poltalloch, Argyll, and Isabella Harriet, daughter of John Wingfield. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. Political career Malcolm was elected Member of Parliament for Boston in 1860, resigning in 1878 by becoming Steward of the Manor of Northstead. He was later Member of Parliament for Argyllshire from 1885 to 1892.
