Donald E. Adams
Donald E. Adams (February 23, 1921 – August 30, 1952) was a United States Air Force flying ace during the Korean War. He was born in Caton, New York. After earning a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan College in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He was awarded his pilot's wings and commissioned a second lieutenant on August 30, 1943. He then served as an instructor at Newport, Arkansas until July 1944. In February 1945, however, he joined the 343rd Fighter Squadron of the 55th Fighter Group in the European Theater of World War II. He was credited with two enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground. He remained in the military after the war, flying F-80 Shooting Star and F-86 Sabre jet fighters as part of the 62d Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Group at Selfridge AFB, Michigan, from July 1947 to October 1951. Caton, New York
Caton is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 2,046 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Richard Caton. The Town of Caton is in the southeast part of the county, south of Corning. History Caton was formed in 1839, as the "Town of Wormley" from the Town of Corning (then known as the Town of Painted Post). In 1840, the town name was changed to "Caton." Dozens of aviators were credited as flying aces in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The number of total flying aces, who are credited with downing five or more enemy aircraft in air-to-air combat, is disputed in the war. The Korean War saw the first widespread use of jet engine-powered fighter aircraft for both sides of a war. Subsequently, difficulty arose in crediting the number of victories for each side, thanks in part to poor records, intentional overestimation, and the difficulty of confirming crashes in MiG Alley, where the majority of air-to-air combat took place in the war. As a result, there is a large discrepancy on both sides as to the number of victories claimed versus aircraft lost, and it is extremely difficult to determine the accuracy of many victories.
