Donal Leahy
Donal Leahy (31 August 1938 – 31 December 2015) was an Irish footballer. Leahy started his career as a wing-half playing with his home town club Evergreen and on 15 September 1956 scored on his debut in a 3–1 League of Ireland Shield defeat to Shamrock Rovers at Glenmalure Park. He came to Evergreen's notice after starring for Munster Youths against West Germany Youths at The Mardyke in May 1956. Leahy turned down Aston Villa and Blackburn in 1957 to remain in Cork. Manager Tommy Moroney switched him to a striking role which proved to be an inspired move as he was top scorer in the League of Ireland three seasons running from the 1956-57 League of Ireland season to the 1958-59 League of Ireland season. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Originally a monastic settlement, Cork was expanded by Viking invaders around 915. Its charter was granted by Prince John in 1185. Top Four Cup
The Top Four Cup was an association football super cup featuring the top four clubs in the League of Ireland. It was first held in 1955–56 and last played for in 1973–74. It was played at the end of the season. Shamrock Rovers were the inaugural winners and subsequently featured in seven finals. Waterford won the competition the most times, five times in total. The competition was sponsored by the ''Irish Independent'' and a result was also known as the Independent Cup. The cup was last won by Cork Celtic and is currently on display in the Evergreen Bar in Turners Cross, Cork. During the late 1960s the (Northern) Irish Football League also organised a Top Four Cup. Scottish Football League XI
The Scottish League XI was a representative side of the Scottish Football League. The team regularly played against the (English) Football League and other national league select teams between 1892 and 1980. For a long period the annual fixture between the English and Scottish leagues was only second in importance to the matches between the two national teams. The fixture declined in importance after regular European club competition was instituted in the 1950s; matches in the 1960s and 1970s were played irregularly and poorly attended. Windsor Park is a football stadium in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is the home ground of Linfield F.C. who own the land the stadium is built on, while the Irish Football Association own and operate the stadium and pay Linfield an annual rental fee for the use of the land on behalf of the Northern Ireland national football team. The stadium is usually where the Irish Cup final is played. Pat Morley (footballer)
Pat Morley (born 18 May 1965) is an Irish former footballer who played as a forward for Cork City, Shelbourne, Limerick and Waterford United. He also works for Irish broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann as a commentator and analyst on Monday Night Soccer. Career A former Celtic trialist Morley made his League of Ireland debut for Waterford United away to Finn Harps on 25 November 1984 scoring a hat trick in a 4–1 win. He scored in the final of the 1985 FAI League Cup for the Blues. Morley also scored a hat-trick on his Limerick City debut in a Munster Senior Cup clash. The 1964–65 season of the European Cup Winners' Cup club football tournament was won by West Ham United in a final at Wembley Stadium against 1860 Munich. West Ham's Bobby Moore captained a side that also included Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters just one season before all three went on to star in England's World-Cup-winning side of 1966. PFC Slavia Sofia ( bg, ПФК Славия София) is a Bulgarian professional association football club based in Sofia, which currently competes in the top tier of the Bulgarian football league system, the First League. Slavia's home ground is the Stadion Aleksandar Shalamanov in Ovcha kupel with a capacity of 25,556. The team's colours are white and black. Established on 10 April 1913, Slavia is currently the oldest sports club in Sofia. The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Extra.ie FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City from Northern Ireland). Organised by the FAI ( Football Association of Ireland), the competition is currently sponsored by '' Extra.ie''. It was known as the Free State Cup from 1923 to 1936.
