Don Watt (designer)
Don Watt (9 February 1936 – 23 December 2009) created the Watt group, a retail branding and design consultancy. Some of the more recognized brand designs include Home Depot's orange logo and store concept, Sam's Choice, No Name and President's Choice. Watt was the first designer to use photosymbolism on packaging, for Nestle Instant Coffee. Biography Early life Don Watt was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. His father worked in the military and his mother would often paint pictures while his father was on duty, this inspired Don early on to pursue a career as an animator. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art for industrial design. Career Watt's first job after graduation was for A.V. Roe, working on the design for the Avro Arrow and the "flying saucer"—a special project for the U.S. Army. Dave Nichol
David Alexander Nichol (February 9, 1940 – September 22, 2013) was a Canadian businessman and product marketing expert. As head of product development and eventually President of Loblaws Supermarkets, Nichol introduced the President's Choice store branded lines of products in the 1970s that propelled Loblaws from a struggling supermarket chain to an industry leader. For a time, as a pitchman for Loblaws, he became a recognizable Canadian business personality, largely due to his being featured in thirty-second commercials, and thirty-minute infomercials during the mid-1990s. Food Basics
Food Basics Ltd. is a Canadian supermarket chain owned by Metro Inc. The company operates over 130 stores throughout Ontario. History Food Basics was created by A&P Canada to compete with the successful No Frills warehouse-style supermarket operated by Loblaw Companies. It became part of the Metro group when A&P Canada was sold to Metro for $1.7 billion in 2005. Food Basics lowers its prices in a number of ways: low maintenance (no free plastic bags, just free cardboard boxes), store decor is kept to a minimum, and fewer staff are employed, mostly in part-time positions. The chain operates by pushing higher volumes on a limited selection of products than Metro stores, allowing it to compete price-wise with other grocery stores. Super C (supermarket)
Super C is a Quebec discount supermarket chain with 98 stores in Quebec. The stores average in size. Super C offers 8,000 products including some 1,200 products from the Super C private label brand. Super C traces its origins as La Ferme Carnaval founded on September 15, 1982 which opened a supermarket under the trade name Super Carnaval on January 12, 1983 in Beauport, Quebec. The company was acquired by Metro-Richelieu on June 1, 1987 from Toronto-based Burnac Corporation. In 1991, the 14 Super Carnaval outlets were converted in phases to the new banner Super C with the last stores renamed by May 1992. Since then, Super C has expanded by either obtaining the lease of vacant shopping mall anchor spaces, building its own free-standing stores or replacing Metro-branded locations.
