Don Samuel
Donald Allen Samuel (February 16, 1924 – November 23, 2010) was an American football player who played at the defensive back and halfback positions. Early years Samuel was born in Hood River, Oregon, in 1924. He graduated from Hood River High School in 1942 and enrolled at Oregon State College where he played college football for the Oregon State Beavers in the fall of 1942. His college education was interrupted by service in the Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he played for the 1943 Iowa Pre-Flight Seahawks football team that compiled a 9–1 record (the sole looss by one point to national champion Notre Dame) and was ranked No. 2 in the final AP poll. He earned his pilots' wings five months after the war ended. After the war, Samuel returned to Oregon State where he played for the 1946 and 1947, and 1948 Oregon State Beavers football teams. Hood River, Oregon
The city of Hood River is the seat of Hood River County, Oregon, United States. It is a port on the Columbia River, and is named for the nearby Hood River. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 8,313. It is the only city in Oregon where public consumption of alcohol on sidewalks or parks is totally unrestricted. 1946 Oregon State Beavers Football Team
The 1946 Oregon State Beavers football team represented Oregon State College as a member of the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) during the 1946 college football season. Led by 12th-year head coach Lon Stiner, the Beavers compiled an overall record of 7–1–1 record with a mark of 6–1–1 conference play, placing second in the PCC, and outscored their opponents 157 to 81. Tommy Kalmanir
Thomas J. Kalmanir (March 30, 1926 – October 12, 2004) was an American football player. Born in Jerome, Pennsylvania, Kalmanir grew up in Jamestown, Pennsylvania. He played college football at the University of Nevada as a running back and return specialist. At Nevada Tommy set numerous records and was a member of two bowl teams in 1947 and 1948, often considered two of the greatest teams in Nevada football history. He was selected in the NFL draft in 1949 and played with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Colts. He was a member of the Rams' 1951 NFL Championship Team. While with the Rams he appeared as a guest on the television game show ''What's My Line?'' on September 14, 1952 and was the first contestant to be guessed right during the initial free guess round. The 1946 National Football League Draft was held on January 14, 1946, at the Commodore Hotel in New York City, New York. The selections were initially withheld from the public out of fear that the newly formed All-America Football Conference would sign away players selected high. With the first overall pick of the draft, the Boston Yanks selected quarterback Frank Dancewicz. The most notable draft choice in this player selection meeting was made by the Washington Redskins and remains one of the biggest draft blunders of all time. They chose Cal Rossi with the 9th overall pick, but Rossi, a junior at UCLA, was not eligible to be drafted. They chose him again in the 1947 NFL draft, but he never played football professionally. The 1948 Oregon State Beavers football team represented Oregon State College in the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) during the 1948 college football season. In their fourteenth season under head coach Lon Stiner, the Beavers compiled a 5–4–3 record (2–3–2 in PCC, sixth), defeated Hawaii in the Pineapple Bowl on New Year's Day, and outscored their opponents 249 to 236. Oregon State was ranked at No. 54 in the final Litkenhous Difference by Score System ratings for 1948. The team played its home games on campus at Bell Field in Corvallis and at Multnomah Stadium in Portland. The following spring at age 45, Stiner resigned as head coach on March 7.
