Contemporary Art Society (Australia)
The Contemporary Art Society is an Australian organisation formed in Victoria 1938 to promote non-representative forms of art. Separate, autonomous branches were formed in each state of the Commonwealth by 1966, although not all of them still exist today. Victoria The Contemporary Art Society (now Contemporary Art Society of Victoria (Inc.) was established on 13 July 1938, by George Bell. It held its first exhibition in June 1939 at the National Gallery of Victoria, displaying works of artists from all over Australia. Members were not only committed to contemporary stylistic experimentation, but also to engagement with contemporary social realities, and in December 1942 sponsored an "Antifascist Exhibition" at Melbourne's Athenaeum Gallery. However, Bell and others left the society over differences of opinion in 1940, and further differences among remaining members (who included Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan and John Perceval), led to suspension of the society in 1947. Don Ross (acoustician)
Don Ross (June 9, 1922 – August 24, 2015) was a civilian submariner and acoustics expert. From 1945 to 1987, Ross worked largely with the US Navy, making developments in reduction of submarine detection and underwater noise. Ross is credited with discovering that low-frequency ocean ambient noise is largely determined by shipping, and that ocean ambient noise has been steadily increasing due to human activities. He also made the first detailed measurements of the noise characteristics of nuclear submarines. Early life Ross was born in 1922, in New York City. Originally interested in Egyptology in his years of high school (as well as knowing the ancient Egyptian alphabet), Ross attended DeWitt Clinton High School before transferring to Riverdale Country School; both in the Bronx. He was accepted to the University of Chicago as an Archaeology major in 1939, on the eve of WWII. Donald Raymond Ross (July 16, 1914 – March 28, 1996) was an American professional baseball third baseman and outfielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Detroit Tigers, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Cleveland Indians. Early years Ross was born in 1914 in Pasadena, California, and attended Pasadena City College. Professional baseball Ross began playing professional baseball in 1933 with Shreveport in the Dixie League. He advanced to Beaumont in the Texas League in 1934 and 1935. He split the 1936 season between Beaumont, Buffalo, and Toronto. He remained with Toronto in 1937. He made his major league debut with the Tigers on April 19, 1938. He replaced Marv Owen as the Tigers' third baseman. He was the team's starting third baseman for 73 games in 1938. In 632 innings played, he compiled a .946 fielding percentage with 90 putouts, 157 assists, 14 errors, and 15 double plays in 261 chances. Donald James Ross, or Don Ross, (born November 19, 1960) is a Canadian fingerstyle guitarist. He is the only person to win the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship twice (1988 and 1996). His album '' Huron Street'' reached the top ten on the ''Billboard'' New-age chart. Biography Ross was born in Montreal, Quebec to Scottish and Mi'kmaq parents. He studied composition at the music department of York University in Toronto with David Mott, James Tenney and Phil Werren. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music in 1983, he studied philosophy at St. Hyacinth College and Seminary in Granby, Massachusetts while living at San Damiano Friary in Holyoke, Massachusetts and then started his novitiate for the Canadian custody of the Conventual Franciscans of Immaculate Conception Province at St. Francis Friary in Staten Island, NY. He was a member of the North Dakota Fighting Hawks men's ice hockey team from 1961 to 1965. Donald Ross (20 September 1902 – 6 February 1980) was an English music hall performer, theatre producer and promoter. Biography He was born in Wigston, Leicestershire, and in his late teens joined Papa Cragg's Gentlemen Acrobats, a travelling troupe. He learned to dance, and formed a duo, Ross & Dean, in the 1920s. In 1926, he appeared as leading man in the musical revue ''Dear Louise'', opposite music hall star Gertie Gitana (Gertrude Astbury); they married in 1928. She always referred to him as "Bill" – the name of the part he played in the show – as did many of their close friends.
