Don McKenzie (footballer, Born 1939)
Don McKenzie (born 23 March 1939) is a former Australian rules footballer who played 266 senior games for the Essendon Bombers from 1960 to 1974. He played his first match in round 7 of the 1960 season, against Melbourne, at Essendon's home ground, Windy Hill. Talent An exceptionally talented "knock" ruckman (who would regularly punch the ball from the centre bounce to centre-half forward), with an extraordinarily high vertical leap. Employed as an inspector of interstate transport vehicles and their drivers by the Victorian Country Roads Board, McKenzie was strong, tough, and aggressive, and he had the stamina to play hard all day. He always played far beyond his height and weight, and he regularly outplayed much taller opponents (such as Carlton's Peter "Percy" Jones, St Kilda's Carl Ditterich, and Collingwood's Len Thompson), as well as much heavier opponents (such as Carlton's John Nicholls). Essendon Football Club
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is a professional Australian rules football club. The club plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. The club was formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale, Victoria, Ascot Vale home "Alisa", and while the exact date is unknown, it is generally accepted to have been in 1872. The club’s first recorded game took place on 7 June 1873 against a Carlton Second 20. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association then joined seven other clubs in October 1896 to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (later changed to AFL in 1990). Darryl Gerlach (born 25 January 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the VFL. Gerlach played his football in the back pocket for Essendon although he started his career in the centre. He was a premiership player with Essendon in 1965 and won their best and fairest award in 1970. Desmond Vincent Tuddenham (born 29 January 1943) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s and 1970s. Early years and football career Tuddenham was born and raised in Ross Creek, Victoria, a country town near Ballarat. He and his twin brother, Basil, were two of a large family consisting of nine children (seven boys and two girls) to parents William and Anne Tuddenham. Tuddenham's upbringing was typical of country footballers who came from farming families. Before and after school and during weekends, he had to help with various farm chores. Sport, usually football or cricket, was played on Saturday, and the family attended church on Sundays. Alf Brown (6 February 1914 – 28 July 2002) was a leading Australian rules football writer covering the Victorian Football League (which later became the Australian Football League) from 1945 to 1979. Brown was the chief football writer for ''The Herald'' newspaper in Melbourne, during the period 1945 to 1979. He covered an estimated 1000 matches including 34 grand finals. He was noted for the very detailed match previews he wrote as a result of his ability to win the confidence and trust of club coaches. Charles James Payne (born 13 November 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the VFL. Payne started his VFL career in 1962 as a forward, at the age of just 17, topping Essendon's goalkicking in his first two seasons, with 39 and 36 goals respectively. He was at full-forward in Essendon's 1962 premiership side but played in the back pocket in their premiership three years later.
