Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University
The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU ; fil, Pang-alaalang Pamantasang Pampamahalaang Don Mariano Marcos) is the state university system serving the province of La Union in the Philippines. Its main autonomous unit is in Bacnotan. It was created by former president Ferdinand Marcos by using Presidential Decree 1778 to combine a number of state-run schools in La Union into a single state college in 1981. Like Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte, it is named for the former president's father, Mariano Marcos. Before 1993, DMMMSU occupied seven campuses throughout the province. After a reorganization that year, these campuses were grouped into four autonomous units, simply called the North La Union Main Campus (DMMMSU-NLUC), the Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC), the South La Union Campus (DMMMSU-SLUC), and the Open University System (DMMMSU-OU). Mariano Marcos
Mariano Marcos y Rubio (; April 21, 1897 – March 8, 1945) was a lawyer, educator, and politician from Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. A Congressman from 1925 to 1931, he is best known for being the father of Ferdinand Marcos, who was President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986, and the grandfather of current Philippine president Bongbong Marcos. There are conflicting accounts about the exact nature of his death, with the mainstream version coming from American guerilla unit leader Major Robert Lapham saying that he was drawn and quartered in Bacnotan, La Union by Lapham's guerilla unit for being a Japanese collaborator, while the version of the Marcos Family suggested he was executed by the Japanese. He is the namesake of two Philippine state universities: the Mariano Marcos State University in Ilocos Norte, and the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union, as well as the town of Marcos, Ilocos Norte. Bacnotan
Bacnotan, officially the Municipality of Bacnotan ( ilo, Ili ti Bacnotan; fil, Bayan ng Bacnotan), is a 1st class municipality in the province of La Union, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 44,388 people. Economic activities in Bacnotan mostly involve farming, fishing, bee-keeping, pebble extraction, tourism, and Portland cement manufacture. Bacnotan is the seat of the beekeeping industry in La Union. A mining engineer from Bacnotan who saw the limestone deposits in Dumarang (renamed Quirino) also saw deposits of coal and traces of gas. Surfing has become quite popular as well, surfers having discovered that there is a surfable break beside the Holcim Cement Factory. While there are no surfboard rentals yet, instructors from the nearby town of Urbiztondo have been known to bring their students to Bacnotan for lessons.
