Don Leaver
Don Leaver (27 September 1929 – 13 December 2015) was a television director and producer, with a career spanning from 1960 to 2000. He was known for '' The Avengers'', '' A Fine Romance'', ''A Touch of Frost'' and ''Prime Suspect'', but directed or produced many other TV dramas. Leaver was born in London, England, his mother dying in childbirth. His father Edward was a chauffeur so Leaver was brought up mainly by his grandmother in Streatham. After training as an actor at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art he quickly moved into TV production before being invited to direct by Sydney Newman, then with the ITV franchise holder ABC. He directed '' The Avengers'' having already directed its original star, Ian Hendry, in '' Police Surgeon''. As well as directing and then going on to produce episodes for a large number of TV dramas he also directed TV adverts. The Avengers (TV Series)
''The Avengers'' is a British Spy fiction, espionage television series, created in 1961, that ran for 161 episodes until 1969. It initially focused on David Keel (Ian Hendry), aided by John Steed (Patrick Macnee). Hendry left after the first series; Steed then became the main character, partnered with a succession of assistants. His most famous assistants were intelligent, stylish and assertive women: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana Rigg), and Tara King (Linda Thorson). Dresses and suits for the series were made by Pierre Cardin. The series ran from 1961 until 1969, screening as one-hour episodes for its entire run. ''A Fine Romance'' is a British situation comedy starring husband-and-wife team Judi Dench and Michael Williams. The series was nominated for ten BAFTA British Academy Television Awards and was a winner of two for Dench's performances in 1982 and 1985. Cast Judi Dench starred as the female lead, Laura, against Michael Williams as the male lead, Mike. Laura's matchmaking sister and brother-in-law were played by Susan Penhaligon and Richard Warwick, respectively. Streatham
Streatham ( ) is a district in south London, England. Centred south of Charing Cross, it lies mostly within the London Borough of Lambeth, with some parts extending into the neighbouring London Borough of Wandsworth. Sydney Newman
Sydney Cecil Newman (April 1, 1917 – October 30, 1997) was a Canadian film and television producer, who played a pioneering role in British television drama from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. After his return to Canada in 1970, Newman was appointed Acting Director of the Broadcast Programs Branch for the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) and then head of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). He also occupied senior positions at the Canadian Film Development Corporation and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and acted as an advisor to the Secretary of State. During his time in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, he worked first with the ABC Weekend TV (later Thames Television), before moving across to the BBC in 1962, holding the role of Head of Drama with both organisations. ABC Weekend TV was the popular name of the British broadcaster ABC Television Limited, which provided the weekend service in the Midlands and Northern England regions of the Independent Television (ITV) network from 1956 to 1968. Ian Mackendrick Hendry (13 January 1931 – 24 December 1984) was a British actor. He worked on several British TV series of the 1960s and 1970s, including the lead in the first series of '' The Avengers'' and '' The Lotus Eaters'', and played roles in the films '' The Hill'' (1965), '' Repulsion'' (1965), ''Get Carter'' (1971), and ''Theatre of Blood'' (1973).
