Don Dorrigo Gazette
''The Don Dorrigo Gazette'', previously published as the ''Don Dorrigo Gazette and Guy Fawkes Advocate'', is a weekly English language newspaper published in Dorrigo, New South Wales, Australia. History The newspaper was established as the ''Don Dorrigo and Guy Fawkes Advocate'' on 8 January 1910 by brothers Roy and Reginald Vincent. Production The paper continues to be produced by a hot-metal typesetting, printed on a Heidelberg Zylinder Automat press, and is the last known newspaper in Australia to be produced by these means. Its current editors are Michael and Jade English who in around 2006, took over from Michael's father John who had been working for the newspaper since 1961. Dorrigo, New South Wales
Dorrigo, a small town on the Waterfall Way, is located on the Northern Tablelands, in northern New South Wales, Australia. The town is part of Bellingen local government area. It is approximately north of the state capital, Sydney via the Pacific Highway, and west from the coastal city of Coffs Harbour. The town is situated on the Dorrigo Plateau near the New England Escarpment, which is part of the Great Dividing Range. Dorrigo is above sea level. At the 2016 census, Dorrigo had a population of 1,042 people. History The area now known as Dorrigo lies on the traditional land of the Gumbainggir people. European settlement of the area followed on from the early timber cutters in the 1860s. In printing and typography, hot metal typesetting (also called mechanical typesetting, hot lead typesetting, hot metal, and hot type) is a technology for typesetting text in letterpress printing. This method injects molten type metal into a mold that has the shape of one or more glyphs. The resulting sorts or slugs are later used to press ink onto paper. Normally the typecasting machine would be controlled by a keyboard or by a paper tape. It was the standard technology used for mass-market printing from the late nineteenth century until the arrival of phototypesetting and then electronic processes in the 1950s to 1980s.
