Don Banks
Donald Oscar Banks (25 October 19235 September 1980) was an Australian composer of concert, jazz, and commercial music. Early life and education Jazz was Banks' earliest and strongest musical influence. He learned the saxophone as a boy in Australia and was proficient enough to be invited to play in the Graeme Bell band, then one of the finest outside America. He served with the Australian Army Medical Corps between 1941 and 1946 and began to study piano, harmony and counterpoint privately. He attended the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music for two years before moving to Europe in 1950. In the UK he studied composition privately with Mátyás Seiber, who was himself much interested in jazz, from 1950 to 1952. He became a friend and associate of Gunther Schuller and was much involved with Tubby Hayes, writing several compositions for him. Peter Neville Frederick Porter OAM (16 February 192923 April 2010) was a British-based Australian poet. Life Porter was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1929. His mother, Marion, died of a burst gall-bladder in 1938. He was educated at the Anglican Church Grammar School (then known as the Church of England Grammar School) and left school at eighteen to work as a trainee journalist at ''The Courier-Mail''. However, he only lasted a year with the paper before he was dismissed. He emigrated to England in 1951. On the boat he met the future novelist Jill Neville. Porter was portrayed in Neville's first book, ''The Fall Girl'' (1966). After two suicide attempts, he returned to Brisbane. Ten months later he was back in England. Sophie Weisse (1852–1945) was a Scottish music teacher and founder of Northlands, an all-girls school in Surrey, England. She was the teacher and life-long friend of the music scholar and composer Donald Tovey. Biography Weisse was born in Edinburgh in 1852 to immigrant parents. Her father, Traugott Heinrich Weisse, was a refugee of the German Revolution of 1848. Although blind, he worked as a German language teacher and wrote a book on German grammar, which ran into multiple editions. His wife, Sophie Marquidorff, was a Lithuanian pianist who performed regularly in chamber-music concerts in Edinburgh. Weisse had a younger brother, Heinrich, born in 1855. Like their father, Heinrich also worked as a teacher. In adulthood he used the name Henry Whitehouse. A sister Mary was born a year after Henry, and then a brother Victor was born in 1860.
