Dominican Summer Red Sox
The Dominican Summer League Red Sox, often called the DSL Red Sox, are a Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball, playing in the foreign Dominican Summer League. The team, classed as a Rookie League franchise, plays at the El Toro Complex in the Dominican Republic. For the 2021 Boston Red Sox season, the field coordinator is José Zapata, and the Red Sox are fielding two teams; one managed by Ozzie Chavez and the other managed by Sandy Madera. History The Red Sox have fielded at least one team in the DSL each season since 1996; the team that season was a cooperative with the Houston Astros. Since 1997, the Red Sox have fielded their own team. In some seasons, the Red Sox have fielded two teams in the league. This first occurred in 2003, when the Venezuelan general strike of 2002–03 impacted the Venezuelan Summer League, where the Red Sox also had an affiliate. Dominican Summer League
The Dominican Summer League (DSL) is a branch of affiliated Minor League Baseball which is played in the Dominican Republic. The league was founded in 1985. After the demise of the Venezuelan Summer League after the 2015 season, it is the only Latin America-based rookie league. Teams in the DSL are owned and operated by Major League Baseball (MLB) franchises. The league's season typically begins in June, with each team playing a 72-game schedule, and ends in late August. The division winners advance to the playoffs. The two division champions with the best winning percentages receive byes to the semifinals. The start of the 2020 season was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the season being cancelled entirely on June 30. Nelson Rafael Paulino (born January 23, 1973) is a former minor league infielder and current hitting coach in the Boston Red Sox minor league system.
