Domingo Cruz (3 July 1864 – 20 October 1934), a.k.a., "Cocolía", was a late 19th-century Puerto Rican musician, and director of the Ponce Firefighters' Band (now the Ponce Municipal Band). Early years Domingo Cruz was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on 3 July 1864. Professional career Cocolía (Spanish for little crab) played the saxhorn with "La Lira Ponceña" orchestra (by 1919 also known as the ''Ponce Symphony Orchestra'') under the baton of Ponce's renowned composer Juan Morel Campos. Famous for his danceable tunes, Cocolía was also a music teacher and director of the Firefighters' Band, the ''Banda Municipal de Ponce''. Upon the death of Juan Morel Campos, Cruz became the director of the Ponce Municipal Band. He directed it from 1896 until 1916. Death Cocolia died in 1934 in the Province of Alicante, Spain. Ponce Municipal Band
The Ponce Municipal Band (Spanish: ''Banda Municipal de Ponce''), also known as ''Centenaria Banda Municipal de Ponce'', is the band of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The band is the oldest continuously-performing band in the Caribbean and the oldest music group in Puerto Rico. It has performed its open-air concerts for over 125 years. The current director is Juan García Germaín. It has 42 members between 25 and 83 years old. It operates within the jurisdiction of the ''Oficina de Desarrollo Cultural'' (English: Office of Cultural Development) of the autonomous municipality of Ponce. Plaza Las Delicias
Plaza Las Delicias is the main plaza in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The square is notable for its fountains and for the various monuments it contains. The historic Parque de Bombas and Ponce Cathedral buildings are located within the plaza, which actually consists of two squares: Plaza Muñoz Rivera on the north end, and Plaza Degetau on the southern end. Luis Osvaldo Pino Valdivieso (1933–2003) was a Puerto Rican bombard player and director of the Banda Municipal de Ponce for twenty-three years. Early years Luis Osvaldo Pino Valdivieso was born on 14 November 1933 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Training He began his music training in his own home and continued them at the Escuela Libre de Música de Ponce under Librado Net learning violin. He also attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico earning a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He taught Chemistry at the Ponce High School for 33 years. At Ponce High, he organized and established the Ponce High ''"Tuna Estudiantil"'' which he led between 1967 and 1974. Tricentennial Park (Ponce, Puerto Rico)
Parque del Tricentenario is a passive urban park in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The park was built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city. It was inaugurated during the mayoral administration of mayor Rafael Cordero Santiago. Location The park is a passive urban family park. It is located in Barrio Tercero (Ponce), Tercero at the entrance to the Ponce Historic Zone on Miguel Pou Boulevard, at the southern terminus of Puerto Rico Highway 1, PR-1. Features The park is a three-plaza park. All three plazas have gardens and marble benches. Setting the stage for the park is ''El Puente de los Leones'' (The Bridge of the Lions). Teatro La Perla
Teatro La Perla is a historic theater in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Inaugurated in 1864, it is the second oldest theater of its kind in Puerto Rico, but "the largest and most historic in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean." The theater was named ''La Perla'' in honor of the Virgin of Montserrat (Spanish: ''La Virgen de Montserrat''), known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean." It is located in barrio Tercero, in the Ponce Historic Zone. Design The theater was designed in the 1860s by Juan Bertoli Calderoni (a Ponceño of Italian heritage resident of the city) and it bears a neoclassical structure with an impressive six-column entrance. The building was badly damaged by the 1918 earthquake. However, it was rebuilt in 1940 using the original plans and reopened in 1941 with better acoustics technology.
