''Dominaria'' is a ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion set. It is not part of a block. In celebration of ''Magic: The Gatherings 25th anniversary, the story returned to the plane of Dominaria. The expansion was released on April 27, 2018. Martha Wells was the head writer for the expansion. Themes History Dominaria is the plane where much of the past ''Magic: The Gathering'' story was set. Thus, for this expansion, the designers wished to reference that history and make it a relevant part of the gameplay. James Whitbrook, for ''Io9'', highlighted that the ''Dominaria'' set brings "players back to the original setting that kicked off ''Magic’s'' official storyline in 1998, for the first time players have returned to the plane since 2006's ''Time Spiral.'' Time Spiral is a Magic: The Gathering expert-level block consisting of the expansion sets ''Time Spiral'' (October 6, 2006),Announcing Time Spiral by Magic Arcana, ''MTG.com'', March 9, 2006 (accessed June 6, 2007) ''Planar Chaos'' (February 2, 2007), and ''Future Sight'' (May 4, 2007). The trading card game ''Magic: The Gathering'' has released a large number of sets since it was first published by Wizards of the Coast. After the 1993 release of ''Limited Edition'', also known as Alpha and Beta, roughly 3-4 major sets have been released per year, in addition to various spin-off products. ''Magic'' has made three types of sets since Alpha and Beta: base/core sets, expansion sets, and compilation sets. Expansion sets are the most numerous and prevalent type of expansion; they primarily consist of new cards, with few or no reprints, and either explore a new setting, or advance the plot in an existing setting. Streets of New Capenna is the most recent expansion set as of April 2022. ''Ixalan'' is a ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion block consisting of the sets ''Ixalan'' and ''Rivals of Ixalan''. The first set of the block was released on September 29, 2017 and Rivals of Ixalan was released on January 19, 2018. Plot The golden city of Orazca, buried deep in the jungle, houses a great secret.
