Grodno Region ( pl, Grodzieńszczyzna) or Grodno Oblast or Hrodna Voblasts ( be, Гродзенская вобласць, ''Hrodzienskaja vobłasć'', , ''Haradzienščyna''; russian: Гродненская область, ''Grodnenskaya oblast''; pl, Obwód Grodzieński; lt, Gardino sritis) is one of the regions of Belarus. It is located in the western part of the country. The capital, Grodno, is the biggest city in the region. It lies on the Neman River. Lida ( be, Лі́да ; russian: Ли́да ; lt, Lyda; lv, Ļida; pl, Lida ; yi, לידע, Lyde) is a city 168 km (104 mi) west of Minsk in western Belarus in Grodno Region. Etymology The name ''Lida'' arises from its Lithuanian name ''Lyda'', which derives from ''lydimas'', meaning "slash-and-burn" agricultural method or a plot of land prepared in this way. Names in other languages are spelled as pl, Lida and yi, לידע. History Early history, Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth There are passing mentions of Lida in chronicles from 1180. Until the early 14th century, the settlement at Lida was a wooden fortress in Lithuania proper. In 1323, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas built a brick fortress there. Vitold Ashurak
Vitold Ašurak ( be, Вітольд Міхайлавіч Ашурак; russian: Витольд Михайлович Ашурок; 13 October 1970 – 21 May 2021) was a Belarusian political and ecological activist. He took part in the 2020–2021 Belarusian protests, protests against alleged fraud in the 2020 Belarusian presidential election, 2020 presidential elections, was sentenced to five years in prison. Belarusian human rights defender organizations recognized him as a political prisoner. He died shortly after being imprisoned under suspicious circumstances, from an unidentified cause. Biography Ashurak was born in Aharodniki, Lida district. He worked at the "Nyoman" glassworks in Byarozawka (Lida district) as a glassblower. Kyprian Kandratovich
Kyprian Antonovich Kandratovich ( be, Кіпрыян Кандратовіч, Kipryjan Kandratovič, April 29, 1859 – October 31, 1932) was an Imperial Russian corps commander and the appointed commander of the armed forces of the short-lived Belarusian Democratic Republic. Born in what is now Belarus, he joined the military in 1875 and served in the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). He graduated from the General Staff Academy in 1884. He participated in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion and protection of the Chinese Eastern Railway in northern China. At the start of the Russo-Japanese War, Kondratovich was tasked with the formation of the 9th East Siberian Brigade. He saw action in the Battle of Te-li-Ssu and Battle of Liaoyang, suffered a severe chest injury, and was promoted to lieutenant general. The Belarusian People's Republic (BNR; be, Беларуская Народная Рэспубліка, Bielaruskaja Narodnaja Respublika, ), or Belarusian Democratic Republic, was a state proclaimed by the Council of the Belarusian Democratic Republic in its Second Constituent Charter on 9 March 1918 during World War I.
