Doing Time, Doing Vipassana
''Doing Time, Doing Vipassana'' is a 1997 Israeli independent documentary film project by two women filmmakers from Israel: Ayelet Menahemi and Eilona Ariel. The film is about the application of the vipassana meditation technique taught by S. N. Goenka to prisoner rehabilitation at Tihar Jail in India (which was reputed to be an exceptionally harsh prison). The film inspired other correctional facilities such as the North Rehabilitation Facility in Seattle to use Vipassana as a means of rehabilitation. Kiran Bedi, former Inspector General of Prisons for New Delhi, appears in the film. Reception ''Doing Time, Doing Vipassana'' received an average score of 64 based on eight critics at Metacritic. It received a 71% rating based on 14 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. The ''San Francisco Chronicle'' wrote of the film winning the Golden Spire Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival when noting its 2005 theatrical release. Ayelet Menahemi
Ayelet Menahemi ( he, איילת מנחמי; born 1963) is an Israeli film director, producer, writer, editor, and actress. Life and Works Menahemi was born in Tel Aviv in 1963. She attended Beit Zvi School of Stage and Cinematic Arts, graduating with honors in 1985. In 1986, she directed the award-winning 45-minute film, "Crows," followed by her first two feature films, "The Skippers 3" (1991) and "Tel Aviv Stories" (1992). Other films directed by Menahemi include ''Noodle'' (2007) and ''It's About Time,'' (2001),IsraelFilmCenter.org. which she also produced, and she acted in ''Ben Gurion Airport'' (1997). The Dhamma Brothers
''The Dhamma Brothers'' is a documentary film released in 2007 about a prison meditation program at Donaldson Correctional Facility near Bessemer, Alabama. The film features four inmates, all convicted of murder, and includes interviews with guards, prison officials, local residents and other inmates, and reenactments of their crimes. The soundtrack includes music by Low, New Order and Sigur Rós. The film was directed by Jenny Phillips, a cultural anthropologist and psychotherapist; Andrew Kukura, a documentary filmmaker; and Anne Marie Stein, a film-school administrator. Vipassana Movement
The Vipassanā movement, also called (in the United States) the Insight Meditation Movement and American vipassana movement, refers to a branch of modern Burmese Theravāda Buddhism that promotes "bare insight" (''sukha-vipassana'') to attain stream entry and preserve the Buddhist teachings, which gained widespread popularity since the 1950s, and to its western derivatives which have been popularised since the 1970s, giving rise to the more dhyana-oriented mindfulness movement. The Burmese vipassana movement has its roots in the 19th century, when Theravada Buddhism came to be influenced by western modernism, and some monks tried to restore the Buddhist practice of meditation. ''Samatha'' (Pāli; sa, शमथ ''śamatha''; ), "calm," "serenity," "tranquillity of awareness," and ''vipassanā'' (Pāli; Sanskrit ''vipaśyanā''), literally "special, super (''vi-''), seeing (''-passanā'')", are two qualities of the mind developed in tandem in Buddhist practice. In the Pali Canon and the Āgama they are not specific practices, but elements of "a single path," and "fulfilled" with the development (''bhāvanā'') of ''sati'' ("mindfulness") and '' jhana/dhyana'' ("meditation") and other path-factors.
