Doha Municipality
Ad-Dawhah ( ar, الدوحة, ' or ''ad-Dōḥa'', ) is the one of the eight municipalities of Qatar. It is the most populous municipality with a population of 956,457, and is the municipality of Qatar's capital city, Doha. Etymology According to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the name "Doha" originated from the Arabic language, Arabic term "dohat", which means "roundness". This name is derived from the rounded bays surrounding the area's coastline. Administration According to the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, the Municipality of Qatar became the first municipality to be established in 1963. Later that year, the name was changed to Municipality of Ad Dawhah. The country has been divided into eight municipalities since 2014. Municipalities Of Qatar
Since 2015, Qatar has been divided into eight municipalities. In 2004, a new municipality, Al Daayen, was created under Resolution No. 13, formed from parts of Umm Salal and Al Khawr; at the same time, Al Ghuwariyah was merged with Al Khawr; Al Jumaliyah was merged with Ar Rayyan; Jarayan al Batnah was split between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah; and Mesaieed was merged with Al Wakrah. In 2014, the western city of Al-Shahaniya split off from Al Rayyan Municipality to form its own municipality. For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into 98 zones (as of 2015), which are in turn subdivided into districts and blocks, the latter being the lowest subdivision. Rawdat Al Khail
Rawdat Al Khail ( ar, روضة الخيل, Rawḑat al Khayl; also known as Al Muntazah) is a district in Qatar, located in the municipality of Doha. It is situated just outside the boundaries of downtown Doha to the east. As part of the district's master plan, major mixed use developments are being carried along the arterial roads of C Ring Road and Salwa Road. History In early 1888, Doha (then Al Bidda) was raided in a surprise attack by approximately 250 Bedouins from Abu Dhabi. According to local tradition, Sheikh Ali bin Jassim, known as Joaan, had been praying in the Old Amiri Palace at the time he learned of this invasion. Once he finished praying, he recruited several fighters and traveled to Rawdat Al Khail for a last stand with the invaders, despite having only half the number of men. Exclave
An enclave is a territory (or a small territory apart of a larger one) that is entirely surrounded by the territory of one other state or entity. Enclaves may also exist within territorial waters. Hamad International Airport
Hamad International Airport ( ar, مطار حمد الدولي, ') is an international airport in the State of Qatar, and the home of Qatar’s flag carrier airline, Qatar Airways. Located east of its capital, Doha, it replaced the nearby Doha International Airport as Qatar's principal airport. Formerly known as ''New Doha International Airport'' (NDIA), Hamad International Airport was originally scheduled to open in 2008, but after a series of costly delays, the airport finally opened on 30 April 2014 with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight landing from nearby Doha International. Qatar Airways and all other carriers formally relocated to the new airport on 27 May 2014. The airport is named after the previous Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. West Bay Lagoon
West Bay Lagoon, also known as Leqtaifiya ( ar, لقطيفية; also spelled as Legtaifiyah or Al Qutaifiya) is a district of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. Spanning from the Doha Corniche to West Bay Lagoon, the area has villas on one side, and low rises on the other. The district is well known for its luxurious waterfront villas, which are some of the most expensive in the country. As one of the few freehold areas in Doha, properties are available for purchase by non-Qataris. Together with Onaiza and Al Qassar, it makes up Zone 66 which has a total population of 22,024. Al Dafna
Al Dafna (Arabic: الدفنة) is a seaside district of the Qatari capital Doha located on the Persian Gulf. The district is currently rapidly developing into a central business district, and since the late 1990s dozens of skyscrapers have risen in the district, with over fifty more planned. The district is also home to the City Center (Doha), City Center mall, one of the Middle East's largest malls. The district was physically created in the mid-1980s following a massive land reclamation project along Doha's coastline, and started to develop in the mid-1990s. Currently, Al Dafna is rapidly becoming Doha's new downtown district, and with the massive amount of recent development towards the north of Doha; it is also rapidly becoming the new centre of the city. Umm Salal
Umm Salal (; also spelled Umm Slal) is a municipality in the State of Qatar. It contains several historic places, such as Barzan Tower. The municipal headquarters Umm Salal is located in Umm Salal Ali, about 10 km from the coast and 15 km north of Doha, the Qatari capital. Etymology The first word of Umm Salal is Arabic for "mother", while ''salal'' refers to large rocks or stones. Hence, the area's name translates literally to "mother of rocks". It was named for the numerous rock formations found in the area. History As a municipality, Umm Salal was established in 1972, alongside Qatar's 4 other initial municipalities. Al Daayen
Al Daayen ( Wehr: ]; also spelled as [; Wehr: ]) is a Municipalities of Qatar, municipality in the state of Qatar. Most of the urban landscape can be found in the southern zone of the municipality, particularly in the city of Lusail, while the northern and central sections are primarily rural. It is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Qatar due to its close proximity to the capital Doha. Umm Qarn hosts the municipal office and serves as the municipality's administrative seat. Al Rayyan
Al Rayyan (; also spelled as ''Ar Rayyan'') is the third-largest municipality in the state of Qatar. Its primary settlement is the city of the same name, which occupies the entire eastern section and largely surrounds Metropolitan Doha and functions as a suburb. The vast expanse of mostly undeveloped lands in the south-west also falls under the municipality's administration. Al Wakrah
Al Wakrah ( ar, الوكرة, al-Wakra) is the capital city of the Al Wakrah Municipality in Qatar. Al Wakrah's eastern edge is the shores of the Persian Gulf and Qatar's capital Doha is situated to the city's immediate north. Governed by Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, it was originally a small fishing and pearling village. Over the years, it evolved into a small city with a population of more than 80,000 and is currently considered to be the second-largest city in Qatar. Nuaija
Nuaija ( ar, نعيجة, Nu‘ayjah) is a district in Qatar, located in the municipality of Ad Dawhah. One of Nuaija's zones, Zone 41, was formerly known as Al Hilal West but was incorporated into Nuaija as of the 2010 census. Municipal authorities are developing district as a major mixed-use hub for south-central Doha. Etymology Deriving its name from the Arabic word ''naaja'' meaning "female sheep", (this incorrect) the area was so named because a well in the area was said to yield water as sweet as sheep's milk. History In J.G. Lorimer's ''Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf'', Nuaija was described as place 3 miles from the town of Al Bidda from whence the town derived its water supply in 1908.
