Dogwood Creek (Queensland)
Dogwood Creek is a creek in the Maranoa Region, Queensland, Australia. Geography Dogwood Creek is long and drops from an elevation 361 metres to 260 metres (101 metres in total). Fish found in the creek include golden perch, Mary River cod, Murray cod, silver perch, spangled perch and yabbies. The creek eventually merges with the Balonne River to become part of the Condamine River. History The creek was named after the dogwood bushes in the area by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt on 23 October 1844 on his expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington (now Darwin, Northern Territory). A commonly used track to access homesteads in the area (now the Warrego Highway) crossed the creek; that location became known as Dogwood Crossing. Condamine River
The Condamine River, part of the Balonne catchment that is part of the Murray-Darling Basin, drains the northern portion of the Darling Downs, an area of sub-coastal southern Queensland, Australia. Miles is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Miles had a population of 1,746 people. Geography The town is on the Warrego Highway, west of Brisbane, the state capital, 211 kilometres (131 mi) west of Toowoomba, 127 kilometres (79 mi) west of Dalby and 48 kilometres (29 mi) west of Chinchilla. Warrego Highway
The Warrego Highway is located in southern Queensland, Australia. It connects coastal centres to the south western areas of the state, and is approximately 715 km in length. It takes its name from the Warrego River, which is the endpoint of the highway. The entire highway is part of the National Highway system linking Darwin and Brisbane: formerly National Highway 54, Queensland began to convert to the alphanumeric system much of Australia had adopted in the early-2000s and this road is now designated as National Highway A2. Moreton Bay
Moreton Bay is a bay located on the eastern coast of Australia from central Brisbane, Queensland. It is one of Queensland's most important coastal resources. The waters of Moreton Bay are a popular destination for recreational anglers and are used by commercial operators who provide seafood to market. The Port of Brisbane coordinates large traffic along the shipping channel which crosses the northern section of the bay. The bay serves as a safe approach to the airport and reduces noise pollution over the city to the west of the runway. A number of barge, ferry and water-taxi services also travel over the bay. ''Jacksonia scoparia'', commonly known as dogwood (from its strong odour when burning), is a native species of a pea-flowered, greyish, leafless, broom-like shrub or small tree that occurs in the south east of Queensland, Australia and eastern New South Wales. Description ''Jacksonia scoparia'' grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching 12 m in height. Its grey bark is rough with furrows. Taxonomy Scottish botanist Robert Brown described the dogwood in 1811 in Rees's Cyclopædia, from material sent by John White and George Caley to Kew Garden. Balonne River
The Balonne River, part of the Murray-Darling Basin system, is a short yet significant part of the inland river group of South West Queensland, Australia. Course and features The river is a continuation of the Condamine River. After flowing through Surat the river flows south south-westerly down through the E.J. Beardmore Dam (Lake Kajarabie). Passing through St George it continues in the same south-west direction, until about north of Dirranbandi, where it branches, with the western branch then being called the Culgoa River. The eastern branch continues on as the Balonne River through Dirranbandi.
