Doetinchem (; Low Saxon: ) is a city and municipality in the east of the Netherlands. It is situated along the Oude IJssel (Old IJssel) river in a part of the province of Gelderland called the Achterhoek. The municipality had a population of in and consists of an area of of which is water. This makes Doetinchem the largest town (by population) in the Achterhoek. On 1 January 2005, a municipal restructuring merged the neighbouring municipality of Wehl as well as the Zelhelmse Broek area with Doetinchem. As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Achterhoek
The Achterhoek (; Dutch Low Saxon: ''Achterhook'') is a cultural region in the Eastern Netherlands. Its name (meaning "rear-corner") is geographically appropriate because the area lies in the easternmost part of the province of Gelderland and therefore in the east of the Netherlands, protruding into Germany. The Achterhoek lies at the east of the IJssel and Oude IJssel rivers. On the other sides, it borders Germany to the southeast and the province of Overijssel to the northeast. In 2015, the Achterhoek had a population of 389,682. The region is also called de Graafschap (Dutch for earldom, shire or county; namesake of VBV De Graafschap in Doetinchem) because it coincides with the historical County of Zutphen. IJzevoorde
IJzevoorde is a hamlet in the municipalities of Doetinchem and Bronckhorst in the province of Gelderland in the east part of the Netherlands. Overview It was first mentioned in 1235 as Ysenuort and means fordable place through the IJze. The postal authorities have placed it under Doetinchem. In 1840, it was home to 839 people. It includes a school, a kindergarten, a gym, a bar and a small stage. The school has about 60 students and there are a lot of farmers' children attending the school. IJzevoorde also has a small campground. Gaanderen
Gaanderen is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Gelderland. It is located in the municipality of Doetinchem. The number of inhabitants is around 5,575 (2020). It was first mentioned around 1200 as de Gernere, and means "tapering land on a sandy ridge". Gaanderen was home to 482 people in 1840. The St Martinus Church dates from 1913 and is a replacement of a 1854 church. The tower of the old church remained. Oosseld
Oosseld or Oosselt, also known as De Bloemenbuurt is a district within, and former hamlet (buurtschap) of the municipality of Doetinchem, located in the Dutch province of Gelderland. Until 1919 Oosseld belonged to the municipality Ambt Doetinchem. '' Koekendaal'' and '' Ter Gun'' are also part of Ooseld. History At the first population census, following the introduction of the Burgerlijke Stand, Oosseld consisted of 79 houses and 580 citizens. In 1870 there were 741 citizens, and by 1890 the population had once again decreased, this time to 572. The Roman Catholic church of ''Ter Gun'' had services held by the pastor of '' Wijnbergen'', which nowadays is part of the municipality of Doetinchem, but was included in the municipality of Bergh at that time. De Huet
De Huet is a suburban district near the city of Doetinchem, mostly built in the 1980s and 1990s. The district is located south-west of the city centre, and south of the Oude IJssel river. The residential district has a lot of greenery. Apart from that, the mall ''de Bongerd'' (roughly: ''the Orchard'') is located within the district. ''De Bongerd'' includes community centre ''De Zuwe'', a church ''De Wingerd'' (roughly: ''the Vineyard'') and a former sports hall. There are also a multitude of shops throughout the district. Overstegen
Overstegen is a district in the north-east of Doetinchem, the biggest city within the Gelderse Achterhoek. Typical for this district is the many apartment buildings found by the Caenstraat and around the mall. Apart from a mall, a care facility, Het Trommelslag, is found within. The district was built in the 1960s and 1970s. During construction of the district, several flint arrowheads were found, as well as remains of wires. Other archaeological finds are a bronze pouch (early or late Bronze Age, found near de Wrange) and a bronze axehead (late Bronze Age, found at the banks of the Oude IJssel).
