Dodanduwa
Dodanduwa is a small coastal town situated in Galle District, Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The town is located approximately north of Galle and south of Colombo. Prior to the Second World War, Dodanduwa was known as the commercial centre for Salt Fish or Jaadi. Transport Road Located on the A2 highway ( Colombo-Galle-Hambantota-Wellawaya) a part of the Colombo-Galle road. Rail Dodanduwa railway station is the 45th station on the Coastal Line and is located from Colombo. The station, constructed in 1900, has one platform and all non-express trains running on the Coastal Line stop at the station. Education The Sri Piyaratana School at Dodanduwa is the first Buddhist School in the country, and was inaugurated by Sri Piyaratana Tissa Mahanayake Thero in 1869. Sri Piyaratana Tissa Mahanayake Thero
Sri Piyaratana Tissa Mahanayake Thero ( si, දොඩන්දුවේ ශ්රි පියරත්න තිස්ස මහ නායක ස්වාමින් වහන්සේ) (12 December 1826 - 20 May 1907), also known as Dodanduwa Piyaratne Thero, was the Mahanayaka Thero of the Amarapura Nikaya (circa 1860s), and the Sanganayake of the Southern Province. He popularised the 'Poruwa' ceremony at Buddhist weddings. He established Sri Lanka's first Buddhist school in 1869, Jinalabdhi Vishodaka, now known as Dodanduwa Piyarathana Vidyalaya. He is believed to be the founding father of Buddhist education in Sri Lanka. He was a member of the Weerasooriya family of Dodanduwa and Hikkaduwa, he was the brother of David Weerasooriya and uncle of Arnolis Weerasooriya. The Tibetan Monk S. Mahinda was ordained by him. Island Hermitage
Island Hermitage on (Polgasduwa) Dodanduwa Island, Galle District, Sri Lanka is a famous Buddhist forest monastery founded by Ven Nyanatiloka Mahathera in 1911. It’s a secluded place for Buddhist monks to study and meditate in the Buddhist tradition. It also has an English and German library. The Island Hermitage was the first centre of Theravāda Buddhist study and practice set up by and for Westerners. Its residents, monks and laymen, studied Theravada Buddhism and the Pali language, made translations of Pali scriptures, wrote books on Theravada Buddhism and practiced meditation. The Island Hermitage once formed an essential link with Theravāda Buddhism in the West. In 1951 Nyanatiloka moved to the Forest Hermitage in Kandy, then joined by Nyanaponika. A2 Highway (Sri Lanka)
The A 2 is an A-Grade road in Sri Lanka. It connects Colombo and Wellawaya via Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Route Colombo to Galle The west-coast portion of the highway consists of the Galle Road. Within Colombo, the A2 serves as a north–south backbone to the city. It is split into two one-way streets from Colombo Fort to Wellawatte, in order to ease traffic flow.
