Dobbs County, North Carolina
Dobbs County, North Carolina was a county located in the United States, U.S. state of North Carolina. History Dobbs County was formed in 1758 from Johnston County, North Carolina, Johnston County, though the legislative act that created it did not become effective until April 10, 1759. It was named for Arthur Dobbs, List of governors of North Carolina (1712–1776), governor of North Carolina from 1754 until 1764. In 1779 the western part became Wayne County, North Carolina, Wayne County; the county seat was moved from its original location on Walnut Creek to the town of Kingston, which was renamed Kinston, North Carolina, Kinston in 1784. Because the name Dobbs reminded the population of the colonial past, in 1791 it was divided by the North Carolina legislature into Glasgow County (later renamed Greene County, North Carolina, Greene County) and Lenoir County, North Carolina, Lenoir County; it ceased to exist. Dobbs County Regiment
The Dobbs County Regiment was a unit of the North Carolina militia that served during the American Revolution. The regiment was one of thirty-five existing county militias that were authorized by the North Carolina Provincial Congress to be organized on September 9, 1775. All officers were appointed with commissions from the Provincial Congress. On May 4, 1776, the regiment was placed under the command of the New Bern District Brigade commanded by Brigadier General Richard Caswell. The regiment was active until the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783 and was engaged in twelve known battles and skirmishes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Fort Dobbs (North Carolina)
Fort Dobbs was an 18th-century fort in the Yadkin–Pee Dee River Basin region of the Province of North Carolina, near what is now Statesville in Iredell County. Used for frontier defense during and after the French and Indian War, the fort was built to protect the American settlers of the western portion of what was then Rowan County, and served as a vital outpost for soldiers, traders, and colonial officials. Fort Dobbs' primary structure was a blockhouse with log walls, surrounded by a shallow ditch, and by 1761, a palisade. It was intended to provide protection from French-allied Native Americans such as the Shawnee and Delaware, and French raids into North Carolina. The fort's name honored Arthur Dobbs, the Royal Governor of North Carolina from 1755 to 1765, who played a role in designing the fort and authorized its construction. ''Fort Dobbs'' is a 1958 American Western film, the first of three directed by Gordon Douglas to star Clint Walker. The other two were: '' Yellowstone Kelly'' in 1959 and '' Gold of the Seven Saints'' in 1961. Released by Warner Brothers and based on a screenplay by George W. George and Burt Kennedy, the film runs for 93 minutes with black-and-white photography provided by William H. Clothier. Dobbs Ferry is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 10,875 according to the 2010 United States Census. In 2019, its population rose to an estimated 11,027. Dobbs Ferry station is a commuter rail stop on the Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line, located in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Trains leave for New York City every 25 to 30 minutes. It is 19.9 miles from Grand Central Terminal and travel time to Grand Central is about 44 minutes by local train. History Dobbs Ferry station opened on September 29, 1849 with its origins as part of the Hudson River Railroad. The current station house, which was built in 1889 by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, became a Penn Central station upon the merger between NYC and Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968 like many NYCRR stations in Westchester County, until it was taken over by Conrail in 1976, and then by Metro-North Railroad in 1983. Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District is a grade K–12 school district based in Dobbs Ferry, New York, in the Hudson Valley, approximately 20 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Dobbs Weir is both a weir in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire and an area of Roydon, Essex in England on the River Lea. It is well known for angling, outdoor beauty and watersports. It is overlooked by the ''Fish and Eels'' pub. Angling The weir is a popular fishery. In 2003, the then record Chub weighing 8.8 pounds was caught by Tim Archer. The fishery is owned by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and is currently (2013) controlled by the partnership of Ware Angling Club and Hertford Angling Club forming a part of the Towpath Fishery.
