Dmitry Konstantinovich Faddeev ( rus, Дми́трий Константи́нович Фадде́ев, , ˈdmʲitrʲɪj kənstɐnʲˈtʲinəvʲɪtɕ fɐˈdʲe(j)ɪf; 30 June 1907 – 20 October 1989) was a Soviet mathematician. Biography Dmitry was born June 30, 1907, about 200 kilometers southwest of Moscow on his father's estate. His father Konstantin Tikhonovich Faddeev was an engineer while his mother was a doctor and appreciator of music who instilled the love for music in Dmitry. Friends found his piano playing entertaining. In 1928 he graduated from Petrograd State University, as it was then called. His teachers included Ivan Matveyevich Vinogradov and Boris Nicolaevich Delone. In 1930 he married Vera Nicolaevna Zamyatina and in 1934 she gave birth to Lyudvig Dmitrievich Faddeev who grew up to be a physicist. Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). It is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings. It was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700. Soviet Student Olympiads
Soviet Student Olympiad was an annual set of contests for students in USSR. There were two separate multi-round competitions every year: for higher education (universities) and general education (starting from 7th to 10th/11th grade). Both competitions had several rounds, and winners from lower rounds would go to the next round. Not only individual members, but teams were awarded too. The main difference between two Olympiads was that the school one had separate threads for every grade, while the university one was for all students. Contest format Both Olympiads had the same format of the contests. Students would come in teams representing their location, e.g. schools or republics. Each contest could have 2-3 parts. Faddeev–LeVerrier Algorithm
In mathematics (linear algebra), the Faddeev–LeVerrier algorithm is a recursive method to calculate the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial p_A(\lambda)=\det (\lambda I_n - A) of a square matrix, , named after Dmitry Konstantinovich Faddeev and Urbain Le Verrier. Calculation of this polynomial yields the eigenvalues of as its roots; as a matrix polynomial in the matrix itself, it vanishes by the fundamental Cayley–Hamilton theorem. Computing determinant from the definition of characteristic polynomial, however, is computationally cumbersome, because \lambda is new symbolic quantity, whereas this algorithm works directly with coefficients of matrix A.
