Dmitry Bertman
Dmitry Alexandrovitch Bertman (Russian: Дмитрий Александрович Бертман; born 31 October 1967) is a Russian theatre and opera director and the founder and artistic director of Helikon Opera in Moscow.Sleeman, Elizabeth (ed.)"Bertman, Dmitry Alexandrovitch" ''The International Who's Who 2004''. Routledge, (2003) p. 156. Early years Bertman was born in Moscow, the son of Alexander Bertman and Ludmila Zhumaeva. He graduated from Russian Academy of Theatre Arts where he studied under Georgy Ansimov. Back in his student years he staged a number of opera, musical and dramatic performances at first in his Studio Theater together with Jacob Rosenberg and later in professional theaters in Moscow, Tver, Odessa and Syktyvkar. Feodor Ivanovich Chaliapin ( rus, Фёдор Ива́нович Шаля́пин, Fyodor Ivanovich Shalyapin, ˈfʲɵdər ɪˈvanəvʲɪtɕ ʂɐˈlʲapʲɪn}; April 12, 1938) was a Russian opera singer. Possessing a deep and expressive bass voice, he enjoyed an important international career at major opera houses and is often credited with establishing the tradition of naturalistic acting in his chosen art form. During the first phase of his career, Chaliapin endured direct competition from three other great basses: the powerful (1869–1942), the more lyrical (1871–1948), and Dmitri Buchtoyarov (1866–1918), whose voice was intermediate between those of Sibiriakov and Kastorsky. ''Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk'' (russian: Леди Макбет Мценского уезда, translit=Ledi Makbet Mtsenskogo uyezda, link=no, translation=Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District) is an opera in four acts and nine scenes by Dmitri Shostakovich, his Opus 29. The libretto, jointly written by Alexander Preys and the composer, is based on the novella ''Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District'' by Nikolai Leskov. Dedicated by Shostakovich to his first wife, physicist Nina Varzar, the roughly 160-minute opera was first performed on 22 January 1934 at the Leningrad Maly Operny, and two days later in Moscow. ''The Tsar's Bride'' ( rus, Царская невеста, Tsarskaya nevesta ) is an opera in four acts by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, the composer's tenth opera. The libretto, by Ilia Tyumenev, is based on the drama of the same name by Lev Mey. Mey's play was first suggested to the composer as an opera subject in 1868 by Mily Balakirev. (Alexander Borodin, too, once toyed with the idea.) However, the opera was not composed until thirty years later, in 1898. The first performance of the opera took place in 1899 at the Moscow theater of the Private Opera of Savva Mamontov. Rimsky-Korsakov himself said of the opera that he intended it as a reaction against the ideas of Richard Wagner, and to be in the style of "cantilena ''par excellence''".
