Yothu Yindi
Yothu Yindi (Yolŋu Matha, Yolngu for "child and mother", pronounced ) are an Australian musical group with Australian Aboriginal, Aboriginal and ''List of English words of Malay origin#B, balanda'' (non-Aboriginal) members, formed in 1986 as a merger of two bands formed in 1985 – a white rock group called the Swamp Jockeys and an unnamed Aboriginal folk group. The Aboriginal members came from Yolngu, Yolngu homelands near Yirrkala, Northern Territory, Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in Northern Territory's Arnhem Land. ''Tribal Voice'' is the second studio album by Yothu Yindi, released in September 1991 on the Mushroom Records label. The album peaked at number 4 on the ARIA Charts and was certified 2× Platinum. At the 1992 ARIA Awards Yothu Yindi won ARIA Award for Best Cover Art for ''Tribal Voice'' by Louise Beach and Mushroom Art with photography by Serge Thomann; ARIA Award for Engineer of the Year for "Maralitja", "Dharpa" and "Tribal Voice" by David Price, Ted Howard, Greg Henderson and Simon Polinski; ARIA Award for Best Indigenous Release for ''Tribal Voice''; ARIA Award for Song of the Year and Single for the Year for "Treaty". Stephen Maxwell Johnson
Stephen Maxwell Johnson is an Australian filmmaker, best known for his films ''Yolngu Boy'' (2001) and ''High Ground'' (2020). He is also known for directing Yothu Yindi's music videos in the late 1980s to early 1990s. Early life and education Johnson was born in England. His parents were teachers, who worked in several places around the world. He grew up in the Bahamas, Africa and the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia. His father became a senior teacher at Kormilda College, a secondary school for Aboriginal students in Darwin, and Johnson made friends with many of the students there. "Treaty" is a protest song by Australian musical group Yothu Yindi, which is made up of Aboriginal and '' balanda (non-Aboriginal)'' members. Released in June 1991, "Treaty" was the first song by a predominantly Aboriginal band to chart in Australia and was the first song partly in any Aboriginal Australian language to gain extensive international recognition, peaking at No. 6 on the ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Play singles charts. The song contains lyrics in Gumatj, one of the Yolngu Matha dialects and a language of the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land in northern Australia. The song was released three years after the presentation of the Barunga Statement to then-Prime Minister Bob Hawke. The ARIA Music Award for Best Indigenous Release was an award presented at the annual ARIA Music Awards. It was presented from 1987 through to 1998. Originally titled Best Indigenous Record in 1987. It was renamed Best Aboriginal/Islander Release in 1995. From 1996 it was Best Indigenous Release. The award for Best Indigenous Release was first presented to Coloured Stone for their album ''Human Love''. It was retired after the 1998 awards with Archie Roach winning the final award for his album ''Looking for Butter Boy''. ''Homeland Movement'' is the debut studio album by Australian rock band Yothu Yindi that was released in April 1989 on the Mushroom Records label. The album peaked at number 59 on the ARIA Chart in 1992. Background and release Following a tour of Australia and North America in late 1988, supporting Midnight Oil, the band signed with Mushroom Records and spent a day in Sydney recording a demo tape. Mushroom Records released the demo as the band's debut album. One side of the album comprised punchy politicised rock songs, such as "Mainstream", whilst the other side concentrated on traditionally based songs like "Djapana (Sunset Dreaming)", written by former teacher Mandawuy Yunupingu.
