Joseph (Yossef) Zaritsky ( he, יוסף זריצקי; September 1, 1891 – November 30, 1985) was one of the early promoters of modern art in the Land of Israel both during the period of the Yishuv (the body of Jewish residents in the Land of Israel before the establishment of the State of Israel) and after the establishment of the State. Amiram Tamari ( he, עמירם תמרי, 22 March 1913 – 3 July 1981) was an Israeli illustrator and artist. Tamari was a Dizengoff Prize winner for painting in 1941. Arie Aroch
Arie Aroch (in Hebrew אריה ארוך; born 1908, in Russia – October 15, 1974, in Israel) was an Israeli painter and diplomat born in Kharkiv, which was part of the Russian Empire. Aroch's work was a mixture of Pop Art and abstract art, along with elements from his biography. In addition, many scholars of the history of Israeli art have pointed out Aroch's pioneering use of Jewish themes in his works. Avigdor Stematsky
Avigdor Stematsky (1908–1989) was a Russian Empire-born Israeli painter. He is considered one of the pioneers of Israeli abstract art. Biography Stematsky was born in 1908 in Odessa. He joined the Massad group in Tel Aviv. In 1929, he went to Paris to study at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Académie Colarossi. He was one of the founders of the New Horizons group. He held his first solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art at the age of 31. In the constellation of Israel art, Stematsky and Yehezkiel Streichman stand out as a pair. Moshe Castel ( he, משה קסטל; 1909 – December 12, 1991) was an Israeli painter. Biography Moshe Elazar Castel born in Jerusalem, Ottoman Palestine, in 1909, to Rabbi Yehuda Castel and his wife Rachel. The family was descended from Spanish Jews from Castile who immigrated to the Holy Land after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. His father was born in Hebron. He opened religious schools for Sephardi boys in the Nahalat Shiv'a and Bukharim quarters of Jerusalem. Moshe grew up in the Bukharim neighborhood, where he attended his father's school. Jacob Brandenburg ( he, יעקב ברנדנבורג) (1899- December 2, 1981) was a Polish-born Israeli sculptor. Biography Jacob Brandenburg was born in Stawiski, Poland. He and his sister Rachel were orphaned in early childhood. He was sent to study at Łomża Yeshiva. He planned to seek rabbinical ordination, but was forced to leave due to ill health. In 1920, Brandenburg moved to Germany and enrolled at the Berlin School of Art in Charlottenburg. He studied under Hugo Lederer and Hermann Struck. In 1934, he immigrated to Palestine. Mordechai Levanon
Mordechai Levanon (1901 - 1968) was an Israeli painter. He was one of the foremost Israeli landscape painters. He was the winner of the Dizengoff prize in 1940 and 1961. He was enchanted by Erez Israel's light, and the cities of Safed and Jerusalem; all of which feature heavily in his paintings. Early life Levanon was born as Mordechai Weiss in a village near the city of Oradea in Transylvania, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Romania). He began studying painting with his older brother while in Romania, who was also a painter. In 1921 he immigrated to Israel and joined the Histadrut. He studied for a few months at Bezalel. Until 1925 he worked as an agricultural laborer in the "Labor Battalion" in the Galilee Hebrew settlements, and later as a construction worker.
