Division Of Canberra (Australian Capital Territory House Of Assembly)
The division of Canberra was one of the two electorates of the unicameral Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly. It elected 9 members in 1975 and 1979, and 10 members in 1982. Unicameral
Unicameralism (from ''uni''- "one" + Latin ''camera'' "chamber") is a type of legislature, which consists of one house or assembly, that legislates and votes as one. Unicameral legislatures exist when there is no widely perceived need for multicameralism ( two or more chambers). Many multicameral legislatures were created to give separate voices to different sectors of society. Multiple houses allowed, for example, for a guaranteed representation of different social classes (as in the Parliament of the United Kingdom or the French States-General). Maureen Worsley
Maureen Gertrude Theresa Worsley (née Anderson; 1937–2001) was an Australian politician. Worsley was born in Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire in England in 1937. In 1970 she married Mike Worsley and later that year migrated to Canberra. She was elected to the new Legislative Assembly as a member for Canberra in 1975 for the centrist Australia Party. When most of the Australia Party merged into the new Australian Democrats in 1977, Worsley declined to join the new party, and sat as an Independent until the 1979 election. She was an Independent candidate for the electorate of Canberra in the 1982 election for the House of Assembly, which by then had replaced the earlier Legislative Assembly. Worsley was active in abortion rights protests in the 1970s, and was an active member of the Women's Tent Embassy outside Parliament House in Canberra protesting against abortion laws in 1973. Betty Hocking
Betty Ann Hocking (13 March 1928 - 17 December 2017) was an Australian politician. She was a Family Team member of the Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly for Canberra from 1982 to 1986. Hocking was adopted as a baby and raised in country South Australia in what the Australian Women's Register describes as a "dysfunctional home", where she "experienced difficult and stressful formative years". She was educated at Laura Primary School, Gladstone High School, and Miss Mann's Business College. She moved to Canberra in 1944, and was a stenographer in the public service until 1946. She lectured at the Canberra Technical College, and managed Canberra's first secretarial agency from 1957 to 1967, originally running it out of her home. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. The party would retain a presence in the Senate for the next 30 years, at its peak (between 1999 and 2002) holding nine out of 76 seats, though never securing a seat in the lower house. Robyn-Lyn Walmsley (known as Robyn Walmsley) is a former Australian politician. She was an Australian Labor Party member of the former Australian Capital Territory House of Assembly from 1979 to 1985. Early life Walmsley was born in Canberra. At the time of her election to the House of Assembly in 1979, she was 32, a qualified biochemist, a graduate student in politics at the Australian National University, and married with two children. Maurene Horder
Maurene Horder (born 1950) is a former Australian politician. She is notable for having been the first woman to be the parliamentary leader of the Australian Labor Party in any state or territory of Australia, and also for having been the first parliamentarian in the Australian Capital Territory to give birth whilst a member. Since leaving politics in 1985, she has been a senior executive. Early life Horder was born in Sydney in 1950, to Mervyn Horder and his wife Mary (née Brown). She moved to Canberra in 1972.
