Division Of Banks
The Division of Banks is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was created in 1949 and is named for Sir Joseph Banks, the British naturalist and botanist who accompanied James Cook on his voyage to Australia in 1770. It has always been based in the south-western and southern suburbs of Sydney, including the suburbs of Padstow, Panania, Peakhurst and Revesby. Up until 2013, it was held since its creation by the Australian Labor Party, but has grown increasingly marginal from the 1990s onward. It was almost lost in 2004, but the 2006 redistribution added areas to the west in Bankstown and Condell Park which strengthened the seat for Labor. Those areas were lost in the 2009 redistribution, which pushed Banks into new areas to the east, around Hurstville. Redistribution (Australia)
In Australia, a redistribution is the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral divisions for the House of Representatives arising from changes in population and changes in the number of representatives. There is no redistribution for the Senate as each State constitutes a division, though with multiple members. The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), an independent statutory authority, oversees the apportionment and redistribution process for federal divisions, taking into account a number of factors. Politicians, political parties and the public may make submissions to the AEC on proposed new boundaries, but any interference with their deliberations is considered a serious offence. Revesby Heights
Revesby Heights, a suburb of local government area City of Canterbury-Bankstown, is 23 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is a part of the South-western Sydney region. Revesby Heights is located on the northern bank of the Georges River and west of Little Salt Pan Creek. History Revesby was named in 1913 in honour of Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820), the famous botanist who sailed with Captain James Cook on the Endeavour, when he discovered the east coast of Australia in 1770. Banks had inherited his father's estate of Revesby Abbey, in Lincolnshire England, so he was known as the Squire of Revesby.
